RADIO FEUD IS NEAR ITS END, ORATORS HINT

Johnson-Coughlin-Long Debate Is Closed Chapter, Many Believe. Bv T7it*4 NEW YORK. April I.—The air waves carried for the last time over the week-end the denunciatory voices of Gen Hugh S Johnson and the R p v. Charles E Coughlin pounding invective at one another, many believed today. Gen Johnson in his reply to Coughlin's reply to his original at* tack, hinted he had had his say and intended saying no more. Father Coughlm m his weekly radio speech yesterdav referred to Gen. Johnson only briefly, but in such a way as to indicate he. too, was tirtng of the controversy. Os course, there remained the possibility that some circumstance not foreseen by either would bring their bludgeons out again Neither made a direct statement of his intention to end the dispute. Soon after Father Coughlin finished. Senator Huey P L/tng, third party in the microphone feud, was telling the country again about his “share our wealth" program, denouncing president Roosevelt and his Administration, but referring neither to Johnson nor the priest. Called ‘American Hitler’ FathPr Coughlin devoted almost •11 of his Sunday afternoon talk to an attack of the United States Chamber of Commerce, which he said had sired the ‘illegitimate waifs" NR A and AAA. and foisted them on the farmer and laborer. He referred to Johnson directly only once. The "waifs.” he said, had been "wet-nursed by Johnson and his pals.” But In several places he replied to Johnson's bitter attack in Chicago Saturday night inferentially. Johnson said Father Coughlin wanted to become the American Hitler. The priest replied that he was not Important and promised to “step out of the picture" when his National Union for Social Justice “becomes impervious to assaults of wickedness from high places.” Dime-Taker, Says Johnson Johnson had accused him of taking the dimes and nickels of the poor by promising impossible benefits to finance his union. He replied that he did not take the “blood money" of Wall Street. The priest said he had evidence that NRA and AAA were conceived by the United States Chamber of Commerce in 1931 and foisted on the Roosevelt Administration when it came into office. “Big business.” he said. “Holier than thou business. Mr. Henry I. Harriman" 'president of the chamber* conspi’ed to keep President Roosevelt from fulfilling his campaign promises. Father Coughlin said his Union for Social Justice had grown so rapidly that now its membership was larger “than all labor organizations combined, larger than all veterans organizations combined, and larger than the combined circulation of one of the nation's largest newspaper chains.” Bares Organization Plan “Some day.” he continued, “it’s membership may surpass the unemployed labor of the country.” He announced an organization plan for the union that will subdivide it into state groups. These groups will be organized first in 12 of the largest states "which control 50 per cent of the representation in the House of Representatives.” Beginning next month, he said, the union would hold national meetings by radio. He did not name the 12 states. His assault on big business was replete with denunciation. Some 11.00u.000 unemployed are “staggering in the breadlines holding out a tin cup to the prostitute of relief.” he claimed. Labor is “outwitted and out maneuvered” by big business with astute legal talent and the “prostituted press.” he said.
