NEIGHBORS SPLIT ON MISS HUMS IN 'SNUB' FEUD Ardent Dry, She Is Type One Likes or Dislikes — Very Much. I Fit rtlitrj /Vrt, BERKELEY. Cal.. March 29. j Women of Berkeley who like to talk over their teacups in the afternoon are divided into two camps over the temerity of Miss Martha liams in calling Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt “a type of cheap publicity seeker” and Secretary Frances Perkins "a mere politician.” The secret of the split is conj tained in the fact you either like Miss I jams or you dislike her—very much. She's not one who permits ! of a compromise. At about 40. she is the prototype of the college spinster of means. She | is a bright, clever speaker; appar- | ently has means, for she never has worked for a living. She is an ardent dry and is as independent as Queen Mary of England—she wears the same kind of hats. Her features are well-moulded, but plain. Her blond hair is her i outstanding possession of the generally accepted qualities of feminine beauty. It is ungraved and she wears it in pre-war style. Outspokenly a Dry. she is active | in affairs of the women's Christian Temperance Union. She helps draft the legislation the union happens to be interested in. She has been active in the Political Science Club, but it is an intellectual group rather than a ward organization. Those who like her say she is the 1 sort of person who is extremely charitable, but dislikes anyone to i know of her generosity. Those who 1 dislike her say she is a shrewish person. Although she has worked in Republican state campaigns, she never I has been a paid political worker; j the candidates for whom she has worked usuallv have been favored ! sons of the W. C. T. U. She refuses to get up till noon and : apparently does not care what any- \ one thinks of herself or her chari acteristies.
