FRIENDS BACK FIRST LADY IN SNUB DISPUTE Mrs. Roosevelt Needs No Defenders Is Verdict of Mrs. O’Day. Hv fmif'4 rrrai WASHINGTON. March 27.—The coast-to-coast controversy over who snubbed whom and why—with Mrs. Roosevelt up front—raged on today with new talent on the First Lady's To the rescue came Mrs. Caroline O'Day, of New York, a longtime friend of Mrs. Roosevelt, with the word that the Presidents wife •'doesn’t need any defense.” So far In two or three days of 3000-mile statements no one has been hurt but a lot of feelings have. I* all started when Miss Martha Ijams, a University of California alumna leader, ••snubbed” Frances Perkins, Secretary of Labor, by refusing to receive her. Mrs. Roosevelt entered the fray with her definition of the word ‘snub,” which she said means “the effort of a person who feels superior to make someone else feel inferior.” Rebuked by Mother Miss Ijams opened the fight to ail comers then by retorting that Mrs Roosevelt was a ‘ cheap publicity seeker,” for whom she nad •‘nothing but contempt.” While Miss ijams* mother in Berkeley. Cal., rebuked her. Mrs. Roosevelt’s friends in Congress then had some sizzling remarks to make. Mrs. ODay, Congresswoman from New York, exclaimed: •'lt's preposterous. Defend Mrs Roosevelt? Any one who knows her at all knows she doesn't need any defense. A person foolish enough to make such a remark as Miss Ijams made, is obviously speaking without thinking.” ‘Ridiculous,’ Says Mrs. .fenrke* Getting her second breath, the aroused Mrs. O'Day continued: “It seems to me that Miss Ijams revealed her true character when she referred to the Secretary of Labor as ‘that Perkins woman.’ No one with a spark of courtesy or decency would have spoken of a Cabinet member In that way.” Mrs. Edith Nourse Rogers, the Republican Congresswoman from Massachusetts. sniffed at the squabble. “I've too many troubles of my own to worry about what people think of each other.” she said. Rep. Virginia E. Jenckes, the Democratic farmerette from Indiana. said tartly that the affray was •‘ridiculous." C. OF C. SEEKS PLANS ON HOUSING PROJECT Wants Copies Available for Local Bidders to Examine. The Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce has requested from the Public Works Administration copies of plans and specifications for the $3 000.000 Negro housing develop-, ment in the area recently cleared near the City Hospital. This will allow local contractors who desire to enter bids an opportunity to inspect them. Copies of the plans will be available also at the local PWA offices. 1001 K. of P. Building, and at the oflices of Merritt Harrison and William Earl Russ. 1006 Architects and Builders Building, who have been commissioned to design the project.

The appointment of Donal H. Draper as firs* dental interne of the Methodist Hospital was announced toda? by Dr. John G. Benson, hospital superintendent. Dr. Draper will have charge of the new dertal department, to be opened July 1. It is said to be the first department of its kind to be iastal’ed in a private hospital. The Indianapolis Dental Society is co-operating In the project.

PLAYGROUNDS FOR NORTH SIDE SOUGHT Butler Fairview Group to Ask School Use. Determined that North Side children shall have some place to play this summer, a committee of the Butler Fairview Association was planning today to consult members of the Board of School Commissioners regarding the use of school playgrounds during the summer vacation. A. C. Sallee, superintendent of the Board of Park Commissioners, told the association last night that if it could get permission to use school playgrounds supervisors would be provided. As has been pointed out repeatedly by The Indianapolis Times, no reereation grounds have been provided by the eity for the large number of children living in the district.
