LEVEE BLASTS BRING TROOPS TO FLOOD AREA
Guard Called Out to Halt Further Dynamiting in Mississippi. By T'mitrj Prr. GREENWOOD. Miss., March 21 National guardsmen moved into the flooded Mississippi delta today to halt dynamiting of levies by mobs of farmers. A 42-foot hole was blasted in the Tallahatchie River levee last night after 400 farmers descended on guards. One man was injured in a free-for-all fight. Acting Sheriff Ram Clark of Leflore County appaled to Gov. M. S. Conner for troops. Three other dynamitings were reported. one at Phillips and two near Glendore. Other sections of the levee were believed in danger. Threats of dynamiting arise each year during spring floods as farmers frequently cross the river and blast out levees on the side opposite their ands, thus saving their own home.; and crops. % Adjt. Gen Thomas Grayson left Jackson. Mus . last night to take command of the troops, numbering about 300. The Yazoo River also was on a ra.-npag** and She flood menace was increasing in the delta. A squad of 200 convicts worked through the right piling sandbags on weakening levees. Farmers armed with shotguns were on guard to prevent dynamiting. The flood crest was approaching in tributaries of the Mississippi in Tennessee and Arkansas. Levees on the St. Francis and White Rivers were expected to hold, but adequate boats were available to move inhabitants in an emergency. Scattered relief camps housed more than 15.000 refugees as Red Cross workers took every precaution to prevent disease. An outbreak of pneumonia was feared, with several cases reported. to United States Senators Frederick VanNuys and Sherman Minton by John Zahnd. 2315 E. Troy-av. national chairman of the National Progressive party. Mr. Zahnd, who entertains high hopes of placing his party on the ballots in the 1936 election, has expressed his confidence that the National Progressives would sweep the nation. Party officials have indicated that their candidate would be Sena, or Huey Pierce Long but other party leaders are inclined to support Mr. Zahnd as the party’s candidate. Mr. Zahnd’s letter is bitter in its denunciation of "this man unworthy of the name Paul V. McNutt,” and declares that the General Assembly’s act places "minority rights beneith Surfs and Slaves in the esti-
mation of the Democrat and Republican party.” A state-wide rally of the party will be held here April 7 and Mr. Zahnd has asked the Indiana Senators to reply to his letter so that the answers may be read at that time. He closes his letter somewhat menacingly with the line. "If no reply it will be very bad for you.” AU X ILL MEET Medical Society Branch to Hear Mrs. Inez Samper.
