COUGHLIN GETS 88.000 LETTERS IN SINGLE DAY Radio Priest Is Flooded by Steadily Growing Mail Volume. BY FORREST DAVIS Tlnrf Special Writer ROYAL OAK. Mich.. March 20 Tl:* truck which haul* the Rev. It carries, no doubt, more pieces of mail, to and from, than any private conveyance in the republic. The tide of messages flowing into community and to one individual truly is enormous. On a single flay last week the truck brought 22 huge sack-, averaging 4000 letters to the aack. Eichty-eißht thousands letters thus were dumped into the Shrine mail room. It is doubtful if any other enterprise in the Detroit vicinity may say the same. More than 220 on Pay Roll Thomas J. Coughlin, the priest's [father, who daily busies himself in the routine of his son's affairs, could not be sure without checking how many office workers regularly are on the pay roll now. The last report h had showed more than 220 fewer than 230. The flow of mail is Father Coughlin's principal index to the success of his political apostlehood. By that index his influence grows week bv week. He asked his audience to vote by mail on whether he should prolong this lecture season beyond Easter Sunday. Heretofore he had ended the series in the spring. The overwhelming majority cf letters so far tabulated has urged him to persevere. His postal following remains loyal. A sampling of letters received after the reply to Gen. Johnson showed the unsympathetic or adverse ones to be in a relationship of one to 350. Carried out that ratio would inflict on Father Coughlin only 11.000 to 12.000 critical epistles out cf last week's tidal wave. Many Send Money The letters bring quantities of money. Envelopes drip dollar bilLs. fives, tens and drafts. The money is not. however, sufficient in volume to implement all of the priest's projects. His collections were impaired two vears ago by magazine and newspaper articles which implied that the money return fairly inundated him. The handsome new church Is unfinished iargf lv because of such dampening repoits. Nor Is Father Coughlin able to distribute aims as he might wish. In the beginning of the depression, in 1931 and 1932, he denied himself to few callers. He cared for unfortunate neighbors. But presently a drove of supplicants appeared from Detroit. Hus resources and t r.erev were exhausted, if not his will. One morning his father, who lives in Detroit, received a peremptory call from the pastor. Gave Away His Shoes “Please stop on your way out and buy me a pair of shoes," Father Coughlin directed. He had. that morning, literally given away his last pair of shoes. He sustained. I am told, the unemploved of the Royal Oak community. Hus benefactions saved the taxpayers thousands. He still prodigally disburses alms, but he no longer sees each petitioner nor reads each letter asking aid. The task would require a staff. His extraordinary radio responses provide the staff.
