IF, u we fondly believe. national . polities express the wishes of the majority in a democracy, then the world must surely regard us as a finished bunch of liars. For peace, we declare, is our high aim vet this terv year President Rorvwelr has approved the expenditure of 40 millions to increase and strengthen fortifications in the Pacific. After putting 13 millions *nto an air bn c in Hawaii, the Armv is a: King 40,5 millions to cover its • xpense during the next fiscal year—a record. What do you thu.k when you see a man sharpening hi knife? He's petting ready to use it. of course. Thais a foregone conclusion, and the same thing is true in such a program of military preparation. It is not credible that we should put rut s . h vast sums Just for the fun of spending the money. On top of all these facts, too, come* the Navy announcing its intention to hold magnificent maneuvers in the Pacific. Efforts to justify the action sound decidedly weak. Why are they going to the Pacific? Obviously to scare Japan. Obviously to strike a buiiy attitude before other powers. The taxpayer will not be able to get out there and watch the impressive ceremonies, for he's got to stay home and scrape up the com to pay for them. And while he pipes his silly little hymns for peace, his great big wonderful Navy is out shaking the mailed fist at his friends -who. if that keeps up. will soon b* his enemies. And then the cieluded. browbeaten little taxpayer will have to go out and get killed because his great b;g wonderful Navy likes to puff and blow and snow ofT. TARZAN AND THE LION MAN
When Naomi was back in the hands of the Arabs, Atevy demanded at once: “Where is the other one?” “She was killed by a lion,” the girl sobbed. Atewy shrugged. “Well, we still have you to read the map.” But the sinister Atewy had other plans for Naomi after she had served that purpose.

The girl recalled seeing the volcanic hill which was indicated on the map. “If I lead you to the Valley of Diamonds, will you return me to my people?” she asked eagerly. Atewy translated' and the sheik nodded. “Tell her we promise: but you need not tell her that we may forget our promise.”

The Arabs, fatigued by their pursuit of the fugitives, made camp. Next morning the cavalcade crossed the shallow river to the plain. The sheik was elated when he beheld the volcanic hill and located it on the map. “We cross the big river,” he chuckled, “and soon we come to the Valley of Diamonds.”

But when they came to the wide, swift stream, they saw it teemed with giant crocodiles. “If we cross, some of us shall die,” said Atewy. The sheik nodded. “True, Atewy, some shall die.” “Suppose the girl should die?” The sheik shrugged; “Perhaps we can do well enough without her.”
