A Woman s Viewpoint BY MRS. WALTER FERGUSON
MEN are born with certain talents which marriage seems to turn into genius. Witness the cxprrtness with which they can withdraw before the domestic storm. Let us be precise. A wife, nursing a grievance for weeks, sets the stage for her Big Moment. Ignorant of what awaits him. the husband, after an excellent dinner specially planned for the occasion, settles himself for a pleasant evening with a minimum of feminine conversation. B it mama, usually so amenable, even solicitous, now Is utterly unsympathetic with the program. For days she has rehearsed, mustering arguments, arranging her facts, until it looks as if Demosthenes himself could not stand up against her. Inwardly enraged at the unresponsiveness her minor sulkings have met, she lias endured as long •s she can the waving away of all her hints or hurt. Now the hour has struck. From the feminine corner, first tentative threats are made, only to be met with grunts from behind the evening newspaper, whither the opponent fcav withdrawn. But mama is off to a good start, and once her blows begin she becomes a regular Primo Camera, at ambling ove: he; own feet. But what an exquisite release! What Joy to hit out in every direction! She's living through one of the high moments in every married womane life —the delivery of a rousing curtain lecture which it has taken weeks to work up to. She knows the thrill the lawyer feels when he launches his rebuttal argument, or

that the clergyman experiences while he gives a tirade against his lethargic congregation. A philosopher discovering anew some eternal truth is no happier than she. Ar.d this, my friends, is precisely the moment when a husband shows the craven stuff of which he is | made. Muttering an excuse of a | business engagement, he grabs his hat and sneaks out —at the exact instant when there is no answer he could possibly think up in his own j defense. Such a retreat is the last ; insult a free man can give a shel- | tered woman—the affront that makes her feel forever frustrated. When Rhonda heard the bloodcurdling cries of the Arabs, she turned and saw them in swift pursuit. With a cowboy yell and a vigorous kick, she urged her pony after the loose horses. Startled, they broke into a trot. Then an Arab fired his musket and a bullet whistled overhead. Here was anew danger I

But the shot added to the fright of the ponies and they fled along the trail, with Rhonda and Naomi on their mounts galloping behind. At last the frantic voices of the Arabs were lost in the distance. “We made it!” Rhonda called exultantly. Naomi shook her head, for the manifold terrors of the jungle still lay ahead.

When at last dawn cracked the tropical night, they had crossed a shallow river into open country. Suddenly Rhonda cried out: “That hill—it's cone-shaped, volcanic! Maybe the Arabs were right. Perhaps that old map was the key to the Valley of Diamonds!”

Naomi was about to reply when both their ponies halted, trembling. With dilated nostrils and up-pricked ears, they stared at a patch of brush just ahead to the right. Both girls stared in the same direction. The tawny figure of a lion broke from the brush, uttering a terrific roar!
