This vast organization was built from a small businseg begun m a foreign land. In 1845 three brothers. Samuel, Thomas D. and James Kincan. started in the meat packmg business in a small way in ' Belfast. Ireland. It was the custom ; in those times for the packer to buy the dressed hogs from the j farmer and cure and pack the, ahouldeis, hams and middles. The! Kmgan brother* not only handled the product of Irish hogs, but were also importers of American meats. Have Special Cure to the special cure which they ti rd. their products soon gained a favorable reputation, and their business grew rapidly. With the increasing demand for their goods, the Kmgan brothers decided to open a ho*se in the United States, to provide ii.eir European trade with the necessa. product, so in 1851 they established their first house in this counter in Brooklyn. N Y. After a brief stay there, during which their activities were confined largely to packing meats for export to Great Britain, they moved to Cincinnati. This was in 1853. While in Cincinnati thetr business con- i tinued its growth to the point where j it was necessary to look farther ; afield for hogs to supply their trade. ! In their operations, they had found that the best quality and most i suitable hogs for their purpose came ! from Indiana, so late In 1862 they , moved to Indianapolis, where their : main plant has since been located. ! Besides the plant in Indianapolis, j Kmgan Az Cos. have branch houses 1 throughout the United States am selling connections in practically a , foreign countries. Applies Refrigeration In the Indianapolis plant of: Kmgan Az Cos.. Thomas Kingan. one J of the founders of the ii-m, con- j ceived the idea of applyin .* artificial; refrigeration for the cuitiv;, curing j and packing of meats. In 1863, up tier his supervision. J this Idea was successfully worked ; out. making it possible to conduct j slaughtering and packing the >->ar around, whereas before, it vas js- 1 sible for th* packer to operate in the winter months only. This development also was of great importance to the farmer and stock raiser, because it provided a cash market every business day in the year, instead of in the colu months only, as was the case prior to the .advent of artificial refrigeration in the meat packing industry. During the evolution of their b isiness. Kmgan Ac Cos. have steadfastly adhered to their original principle of producing first quality goods and this accounts for the enviable* repu- ! tation of -Reliable'* hams. *ca~on. lard, and its other products, officals of the company say.
