BANQUET MARKS START OF NEW SALES PROJECT Individual Owners Retain Separate Identities Under System But Have Advantage of Group Buying Power. SAVINGS PASSED ON TO PUBLIC Latest Scientific Advice on Management and Merchandising Will Be Available for Entire Membership. The Quality Service Stores, a co-operative merchandising project, opened today in the Indianapolis area under the sponsorship of the J. C. Perry & Cos., Inc. wholesale grocers. One hundred and fifty stores have joined the project and hereafter will be identified by vermilion and silver
gray outside store insignia and by interior decorations of apple green and cream. All of the stores are modernized according to the latest and best accepted methods of merchandising, and the entire project is in control of local men. The grocers participtaing have elected officers and appointed committees to run the project, from the promotion of entertainments among the membership to the election of brands for sale and the consideration of additioal stores in their membership. Banquet Is Held The informal opening of the group was held last night at a banquet in the Lincoln to which more than 600 persons were invited. Officers of che local unit spoke, and listened to merchandising experts of nationwide renown. After the banquet the assemblage was entertained by music and a sixact floor show. Besides the J. C. Perry Cos. there are several other Indianapolis firms furnishing products to the grocers. Kingan & Cos. furnishes meat products; Schlosser Brothers, dairy products, and Century Biscuit Cos., baked goods. Identities Retained Quality Service Stores is a flourishing project and its sponsors expect it to become nation-wide soon. It was introduced in northeastern Indiana first and the success of that unit resulted in an invitation to the Indianapolis area. It is founded on the principale that individual store owners retain their separate identities, yet have the advantage of group buying, and can afford to get the latest scientific advice on store management and merchandising. Savings resulting from these services will be passed on to the customers, officials of the unit state. Among its aims are the following: To establish uniform identity for stores; to improve merchandising ability of grocers; to influence better
[ use of manufactured advertising materials; to promote general cleanliness of stores and personnel; to provide beneficial advertising to independent grocers; to deliver a point-of-purchase merchandising service to manufacturers, and to carry on among independent retailers a consistent campaign designed to stock their stores with well-known and well-established brands of food. Quality Service Stores was founded with twelve members in Lynchburg \ i., in 1922. It now has more than jOO members in 100 cities of Kenti :ky. Indiana, Tennessee. Ohio, Virginia. West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. AN OVEN DELICACY, Apples and Sweet Potatoes Baked in Cubes Go With Pork, Veal. Put a'ternate layers of apples and sweet potatoes, cut in cubes, in a greased casserole. Sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon and dot with butter. Add a little water. Bake in a moderate oven one hour or until tender. Remove the cover the last half hour of cooking. Serve hot with roast pork or veal. A Celery Recipe Stew the celery, drain it and drop into boiling cream sauce. To make the sauce, stir one and one-half tablespoons flour into two tablespoons melted butter and when smooth add one-half teaspoon salt, one-eighth teaspoon paprika, then gradually add one cup of hot milk. Cook two minutes, stirring with a wire whisk. If thicker sauce is desired, add the yolk of an egg and a bit of butter just before taking it from the fire. This dish may be varied by adding cooked green peppers to the celery and cream sauce, half a cup of peppers to the two cups of celery.
