BAR PRESIDENT RECALLS BILLS NOW IN SENATE

Law Committee Notified to Abandon Efforts to Effect Passage. Announcement was made today that Wilmer T. Fox, Indiana State Bar Association president, has directed the association's legislative committee to abandon further efforts to secure passage of three bills sponsored by state attorneys. The action, Mr. Fox announced, was taken because the committee has been unable to have the Senate Finance Committee to report out the u!lls which have been adopted by the House. The pending measures would create a judicial council, give the Supreme Court power to make rules of procedure in the courts and empower the Supreme Court to license and discipline attorneys. Meanwhile, Mr. Fox's announcement stated. Senator Jacob Weiss, president pro tern., has introduced and secured Senate approval of a Joint resolution authorizing appointment of a commission to revise court procedure, a method at variance with recommendations of the state bar association. •'The association did not care to be put in the position of opposing the plans or the administration leaders.” Mr. Fox declared. The work of the legislative committee was terminated "so there would be no unseemly conflict,” he said. Hay Fever Relief Hay fever sufferers will have an easier time next summer if legislation introduced in the House late yesterday afternoon by Rep. Paul B. fiturm (D., Danai is adopted. The measure would authorize county commissioners to issue orders to land owners to destroy "obnoxious weeds on their property,” and the commission could employ weed in-

City Car Tax Hit Legislation which wouM prohibit cities from licensing motor vehicles was passed late yesterday by the House. 62 to 26. despite the protosi by Rep. Fred Barrett <D., Indianapolis), that the measure would take SIOO,OOO revenue from Indianapolis and throw the city budget out of balance. Rep. George W. Wolf <D.. Peru), author of the bill, told the House that municipal truck taxes worked a hardship on truck owners. "Many small farmers drive into Indianapolis only once a year, and still they are forced to pay for these licenses,” he said. Objecting to the emergency clause, Rep. Henry Emig <D., Evansville), said it would cost his city $20,000 a year. "If you intend to pass a measure of this sort give the .cities a chance to straighten out their budgets and get ready for it,” he said. RIFT IS FACING lOWA FACULTY ON ‘HELLWEEK' Sociology Professor Terms Assistant Dean ‘Stupid or Dishonest.’ B]f Cflitr4 Pm* lOWA CITY. la., Feb. 26.—'The "cruel barbarities” of Hell Week on the University of lowa campus threatened today to split the university faculty into a house divided against itself. Prof. E. B. Reuter, head of the sociology department, betrayed the beginnings of a breach in an open letter to the Daily lowan, student newspaper, challenging the veracity of statements by Lonzo P. Jones, assistant dean of men, and describing initiation ceremonies of fraternities as "sadistic tortures.” At the same time university officials said a meeting of the interfraternity council to investigate charges of an unnamed mother that

It originally was scheduled for tomorrow The anonymous mother whose letter to President Eugene A. Gilmore roused the tempest said her son and other boys were "given large dotses of castor oil and sent on impossible errands to inconvenient places” and "kept without sleep for several days.” Campus rumors said she is the wife of a faculty member. Dr. Gilmore refused to discuss her identity. Prof. Reuter took ireful issue with Mr. Jones’ statement that "these incidents occurred in relatively few of the houses and where they occurred only a few’ men were involved.” "Mr. Jones’ statement is so at variance with the facts,” he wrote, "That one wonders if the assistant Dean has been correctly quoted, I am loath to believe he is either stupid or dishonest. “I challenge him to name one fraternity house where regulations have not been violated. May we not have a statement from him that will clear him of suspicion of being a party to the sadistic practices which for years have made Hell Week a gross outrage to public decency?”
