Behind the walls of millions of homes, men and women are thinking about their gardens—Just prosaic vegetable gardens It's fine if you can have fiowers —and with a handkerchief of ground any one can—but it's also something in the pot if you can dig up a patch of earth beside the kitchen door and plant some oldfashioned garden, ass.” Counting your onion sprouts is or.* way to forget the world's confusion. Their dark green shoots pierce the sod like fairy swordbladcs—and who then worries about the King o! Ethiopia and I! Duce? Pale succulent lettuces, chiffon of asparagus plumes, red-veined beet leaves, frail pea vines, spicy tomatoes. beautiful hard cabbages—let the dictators roar! Gardens are really much more important. and a thousand times more interesting, following as they do the supreme mandates of nature, always rational, systematic, budding, blooming and bearing their fruit in t*"' right seasons. Sometimes, of cour e, like the dictators, they disappoint us. The vegetables never look so gorgeous as those on the seed packages, while the flowers are often imita'ions of the ones pictured in the magazines, but what

When Ej-ad showed interest in having one of the white girls for his harem. Atewy pressed his point. "But you will not get one, for the sheik is going to keep them both. And you know, too. that the sheik’s share of tie diamonds will be a fourth. If there were no sheik, we should divide more!”

Shrewdly Atewy continued: “No, Eyad, we shall not fare very well—unless—" “Unless what?’’ “Unless an accident should befall sheiks even as they befall others,” Eyad announced philosophically. Thus content with the germ of their plot, the conspirators lay down and slept.

She leaned over and whispered to Naomi: “When I get up, follow me. That's all you have to do; but don’t make any noise!”

“What are you going to do? We can t go out there in the forest —with the lions! And if the Arabs catch trying to escape, they'll kill us!” Naomi's voice quavered in rhythm with her trembling body. ‘'Shut up. and do as I tell you!” Rhonda replied sharply under her breath. “Come on! Quick!’’
