I VAN DUYN TO NAME LEGION ESSAY WINNER Six City High School Pupils Still in Running for Contest Prize. Th* winner of the constitutional essay contest conducted m Indianapolia high schools by the Hay-ward-Barcus Post No. 55. American legion, will be announced Monday miming by Grover Van Duyn, assistant state superintendent of public instruction. Winners of the contest in their respective institutions are: Mary Ma> Endsley. 17. of 441 N. Grants' Technical High School; Elmer Schloot. 17, of 5683 Winthrop-av, Broad Ripple High School; Martha Ann Fisher. 15, of 2523 Ethel-av. Cri pus Attucks High School; Gertrude Oertel. 17, of 771 Cottage-av, Manual Training High School; Thelma Martin, 17. of 1818 N Sharon-av. Washington High School, and Carter Eltzroth, 16. of 3322 Northwestem-av, Shortndge High School. Subjects for the essays were limited to three topics and were not to exceed 1000 words or be less than 800 words. None of the essays bore the name of the writers when submitted to the judges. The final judges, appointed by Paul C. Stetson, city schools superintendent. are Dr. Christopher B Coleman. State Historical Bureau director; Mr. Van Duyn and Dr. John Smith Harrison. Butler University English professor. The winner will read his contest during a program at 10:15 Monday ; morning over WKBF. during which Mr. Van Duyn’s announcement will be made. The contest was launched by the post during American Education Week. Pay Cut Exemptions Asked Officials and employes of school corporations would be exempt from provisions of the 1932 salary reduction act if a bill introduced in the Senate yesterday by WiUiam D. Hardy <D.. Evansville) and Ward G. Biddle D.. Bloomington) is adopted.
