They rum imliions of human beings because tney are softies. They rear wishy-washy men; selfish, parasitic, bad-tempered women. But, on the other hand, they also save millions because they are never quite ready to abandon them, never ready to say, “Im through with you for good.” Maybe, if we had all the statistics, the account would be evenly balanced. Exhausted by the physical and nervous strains of the day, the Americans slept deeply through the long night. Nor were they disturbed by the unusual activities of the Arabs, who were supposed to be on guard; for the swart sons of the desert moved silently in execution of their sinister plans.

Gordon Z. Marcus was the first to be up. He looked quickly about him. The camp seemed deserted. The fires had died to smouldering embers. No sentry stood guard. He hurried to Orman’s tent. “Mr. Orman!” he cried. “The Arabs! They’ve gone! Their tents, their norses, everything!”

The director’s inspection of the camp confirmed Marcus’ alarm. “We’ll just have to get along without them,” he shrugged. “But that doesn t mean we can’t eat. Wake up the girls, Mr. Marius, and we’ll have some breakfast. Then we’li get moving. The desertion of the Arabs won’t stop us.”
—By Bdgar Rice Burroughs
Soon Marcus came running back. “The girls are not there! They’ve gone ” he cried in despair. By now every one was astir. A thorough search of the camp revealed no sign of Naomi Madison or Rhonda Terry. Then the awful truth dawned upon the company—the girls had been kidnaped ay the Arabs!
