INDIANAPOLIS, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1935

BY STIRGE WELLS Times Automobile Editor SINCE Saturday, official opening day of Indianapolis automobile dealers’ salon showing week, dealers’ show rooms ha v e been spick and span to display their respective lines of new cars. Rooms have been decorated and many of the dealers have used special displays and custom models. Throughout the city in dealer display rooms one can witness what happens to an automobile in twelve months after a stiff workout in the engineering laboratory, before being paraded on the carpet for public appraisal. These 1935 automobile creations are new as a bridegroom trousers, and literally start you to figuring how you can best rid yourself of your rid car and get one of these breath-taking modem automobiles which feature efficiency comfort and style. The automobile producers, like the women's hat and clothing manufacturers, have marie great strides this year in presenting new models, which not only are marked by greater efficiency, safety and comfort, but have far surpassed, any previous efforts in color combinations and appealing streamline beauty. It is hard to conceive, unless you happen to be an automobile designer, how it is possible to improve on this year's line of cars in that particular phase. In recent years this has been the standard yearly prediction, but after viewing 1935 efforts it is hard to imagine. This year seems to stand out as the exception. No longer are engines a major problem l of the automobile industry. They have been conquered. That is why the efforts of the

best brains available have been directed toward improved body design for safety, comfort and beauty. The element of danger has been so far removed with the addition of shatter proof glass as standard equipment, complete steel construction throughout and greater braking power that it is hard to visualize any one being seriously injured in anything other than, a collision with a locomotive. Knee-action continues to be a popular form of wheel suspension, although several manufacturers have incorporated in their lines anew type of springing, which gives the same effect, especially for the back seat passengers who have been used to riding the bumps a little harder than those in the front seat. In most cases this has been accomplished by pushing the body farther forward, which in turn gives a better distribution of weight, puts the back seat farther forward, and according to engineers, gives every one a more comfortable ride. There also is a decided trend to the lower price brackets by the entire industry. Even manufacturers who in bygone years confined their efforts to the upper price brackets exclusively, have partially succumbed, and as a result are catering to a much larger buying field. In many cases this is a welcome change for makers of higher priced cars who have experienced a dwindling list of prospects since the depression, and improvement of low price cars. Today the keynote of most of the automobile manufacturers promotional efforts is value. Valu> because the 1935 models as a group are much larger, better, smarter and more efficient than ever before.

These pictures will help contestants in ‘‘unscrambling" the pictures, the first of which are shown on one of the following pages of today’s Indianapolis Times in the Scrambled Auto contest, conducted by the city’s automobile dealers through The Times. But, of course, you will want to visit the show rooms and inspect each of the new automobiles personally, for first and second prizes of SIOO and SSO are to be awarded in credits to be applied in purchasing anew automobile. ...
