A Woman's Viewpoint BY MRS. WALTER FERGI'SON

*T\if OT HER HOOD," writes a D'l. widely read, trousered columnist. "should be a woman's creative career.'* This is another polite way of listing us with the livestock. Asa matter of fact, conception and childbirth are wholly physical, requiring neither brains, altruism nor patriotic mo’ives. The woman who only gives birth docs very little to distinguish herself or to help society, unless she can also give to her children ambitions and mentality and training above the average. I know of no place where sheer numerical superiority is less important than the maternity wartt if we arc to keep the world safe for columnists. A favor:*e fallacy of those who advocate church, cocking and children for women is their belief that motherhood disqualifies you for any other achievement, although the opposite has been proved many times without number. r-iris. for instance, was • good rr dentist Mrs. Lillian Gilbreth. an outstanding and world famous engineer. has 11 children. Even our royal lady. Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, has five without any evidence of her talents in other directions being impaired. To tell the truth, child-bearing Increases a woman's talents in other fields. It adds to h'-r youthfulness. enhances her charm, broadens her intellect, deepens her sympathies. In short, it completes her. because It is the richest fulfillment of her being. And never, under ordinary circumstances, does it restrict for very long her ability to

accomplish or achieve other gxeat things. The opposite doctrine, so widely preached. Is a pernicious one, and has restrained thousands of fine, intelligent women from having children. They listened to the tales of the old bogey men so often, they have become converts. So they actually believe that maternity, once undertaken, should be their sole profession. No wonder they shy away from the great experience. All this bosh about one's not being able to do anything else If one is a mother has done the trick. It's made many a smart woman suspicious of maternity. And modem woman, I think, has a right to rebel at such restrictions, such darkage demagoguery. TARZAN AND THE LION MAN

The gruff warriors took Obroski and Kwamudi to the open space before the hut of Rungula, and tied them against the boles of two trees, facing each other. Here Obroski was forced to watch the Basutos torture Kwamudi so horribly, so fiendishly that he feared for his reason. And thus he saw Kwamudi die.

It became evident later that the savages did not intend to kill Obroski this night. They were merely furnishing him with a foretaste of his own fate. The blacks led him back to the prison hut and flung him cold and shivering on the filthy floor. His mind sank into numb despair, and finally he slept.

He awoke at noon. The midday sent new life coursing through his veins. A sudden determination seized him. He would not die as the others had died—like sheep led to the slaughter. He conceived a plan, and the longer he considered it, the more anxious he became to put it into effect.

Almost impatiently now, Obroski awaited those who would lead him to torture. When the swift tropical twilight had changed to night, he saw the warriors coming for him. Obroski crawled out of the hut and met them with a smile. But they led him away as they had led away the three blacks before him!
