TOBIN PRAISES j NEW DEAL FOR HELPING LABOR Teamsters’ Union President Gives SIOOO Check to Democratic Party. BY DANIEL M. KIDNEY linn WrlWr WASHINGTON. Feb' 8 —Amid the tumult of A. F. of L leaders t.urHhg anti-labor charges. Daniel J. Tobin of Indianapolis, president of tfe Teamsters and Chauffeurs’ Union choso today to voice high praise for the New Deal and reward the Democratic party. Mr. Tobin announced that on behalf of the International Brother- j hood of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Sta- 1 blemen and Helpers he had present- j ed a SIOOO check to Postmaster General James Farley to help pay off the Democratic party deficit. "I am doing this because the ex- ; eeutive committee of my own union | voted to do it as a mark of appre- j elation of what the Roosevelt Ad- j minn>’ration has accomplished for | labol.” President Tobm explained. He is here for the A F. of L execu- ■ tlve council meetings. Labor Conditions Better * When labor asks for nine things j and gas eight, we shouldn't forget j about the eight m crying after the ninth. • The NRA has improved labor con- j ditions and unemployment is being I slowly banished among our union members. With 157.000 paid-up members, we have made progress under the New Deal. "It is a whole lot better to donate ! funds to a party that has done j something for us than to go out and ; give the money to Huey Long, Father ; Coughlin or the Townsend planners ; who are merely making promises. "Our members are schooled in the ; idea of backing poor but able men ; in their local elections with funds 1 so that they will not have to get than from someone who is anti- ■ labor and expects compound interest In governmental favors.” VanNuys, Minton Att. nd Just to make the moment dramatic amidst the present labor controversy, President Tobin presented the check at a dinner for Mr. Farley, who appeared in his role of National Democratic chairman. Atty. Gen. Homer S. Cummings, Senator Robert Wagner <D., N. Y.) and Senators Frederick VanNuys and Sherman Minton from Mr. Tobin’s home state of Indiana were i among the guests. Mr. Tobin was an unsuccessful j candidate for appointment under the New Deal to the position of Secretary of Labor. He attended a con- 1 ference with Miss Frances Perkins and labor leaders yesterday in which the President s social security program was discussed. “The whole program is too weak and must be strengthened," Mr. Tobin said and asserted that this ! view was shared by labor leaders pref^nt.
