SEVERAL important editors, who should know better, profess a profound fear of a Japanese invasion. If such a thing ever happens and they take us over. I hope they'll set up in America a duplicate of the "brides' school" which functions now in Tokio. Most of its pupils are engaged girls, being taught the arts of Japanese housewifery. What a sensible arrangement! Thousands of little American girls have acquired a positive repugnance for home work because at a tender age they were dragged by their pigtails into the kitchen and s?t to washing the pots and pans. It's no wonder they have developed *nto the world's worst housewives. In every other vocation we give preliminary training. The stenographer takes shorthand and typing. The milliner learns to make hats. The shop girl studies -.salesmanship. Yet we exptcr halfhearted public school efforts and early maternal spankings to turn out perfect housekeepers. What's more, no person begins the study of a business unless she expects it to become a permanent job. The girl begins to construct hats only after she has definitely decided to be a milliner. How, then, shall we expect a woman to become excited about housework until she knows she’s to have a house of her own? Happily God has endowed certain females with a love for the domestic. They can marry and immediately bloom into excellent housewives. But the average modern girl is not born with this particularly tendency to cook and scrub. She

THE 180th meridian corresponds almost wholly with the International Date Line, and here every new day begins on earth. For every 15 degrees of longitude west of this line, the new day begins an hour later. Finally, as we completely circle the globe, we find a Tuesday beginning, just when a Tuesday is finishing at the 180th meridian. * * * NEXT—How lonic a coast line has Alaska?

After a time they came to a palisaded village of conical straw-thatched huts, from which streamed a hostile throng to view the strange captive. Some of them rushed at him as if to tear him to pieces. Obroski wondered now if he had been spared so that his death might make a holiday for the whole village.

The warriors beat off his assailants and led him to a hut. The doorway was low, so they flung him down and pushed him inside. The interior of the hut was dim, but as his eyes became accustomed to the darkness he knew h~ was not alone. Within the range of his vision were three strange, shadowy figures.
