‘LIE DETECTOR' USED IN^PROBE Slain Night Club Worker’s Wife and Watchman Are Grilled. By f 4 Frn CHICAGO. Feb. s.—Two principal characters in a murder mystery reaching into upper realms of Gold Coast society shouted “liar” at each other before police questioners today while scientists of Northwestern University examined graphs of their famous “lie detector” to determine which tells the truth. Through 43 hours of questioning Mrs. Melba Springer Straub, 34-year-old former night club entertainer, has disputed with a night watchman of the exclusive Saddle and Cycle Club over details of discovery of the body of her murdered husband in the club's basement Sunday morning. Brought face to lace in police headquarters today, the two exhibited bitter animosity over variations in their stories. “That's a lie,” Mrs. Straub shouted when the watchman, Gus Schwartz, contradicted her on a minor point. “ICs not. It’s the truth,” yelled Schwartz. The slain man, Louis K. Straub, 46. was a bartender in the Saddle and Cycle Club, gathering place of Chicago society lor half a century. His body was found by Schwartz and his wife early Sunday, crumpled in a basement lavatory of the club. Seven pistol bullets had killed him. Apparently he had been chased through the basement by the killer, who fired as he ran. Both Mrs. Straub and Schwartz submitted to tests by the ‘‘lie detector” while they were asked almost 100 questions each. Its inventor and operator, Leonarde Keeler of Northwestern University’s scientific crime detection laboratory, said he believed both told the truth, but that Mrs. Straub was concealing information. 30YS SET HOUSE AFIRE Youngsters Playing With Matches Blamed by Firemen. Police today are searching for several small boys who never learned the old lesson about not playing with matches. The boys accidentally set fire to a vacant house at 821 E. 23rd-st late yeste.day.
