A Womans Viewpoint .BY MRS. WALTER FERGUSON

FOR 19 years our family has cept up Its friendship with the proprietor of a very pood restaurant in a small city. He has had his fat and lean vrars, and weathered the latter better than most—mainly because his wife mother of three children. has periodically filled every position in the establishment. She has kept books, helped with the marketing, planned the menus, waited on tables, cooked, and even washed dishes when funds were low. The other day. as is our custom when we pass through their town, we dropped in on our friends and found the man holding forth on the married women in industry. He was almost frothing at the mouth a. he denounced in vigorous those ignorant, pushing, troublesome women who, having hu-band: o support them, insist on working. The male audience cheered Wiule our friend was making the speech, hi. wife w.-nt quietly about his business, attending to the cash register, .'--eing that the patrons BUTLER HOST IN 3-WAY HIGH SCHOOL DEBATE North Vernon, Eluood and Wiley to Take Part in Event. were well served. What would he ] have said. I wonder, if somebody had tapped him on the shoulder and inquired whether he ever thought of taking his own wife out of industry. She gets no stipulated wage, but she is doing work he could pay someone else to do. if he were truly concerned about the plight of the unemployed. What if all married women walked out of their jobs for as long as three months? Thousands of small busi- ! nesses wouid have to close their 5 doors, and men like my inn-keeper friend wouid be forced to work j harder than they now do. The truth is obvious. Men d'—.’t mind married women working; they only object to our earning. JORDAN PUPILS TO GIVE RECITAL HERE TUESDAY Concert Will Be Given by Group in Odcon Hail. Pat O’Grady breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the expression of strong, fighting determination come over Tom Orman’s face. The chief was himself again. Orman now spoke to Pat coolly. “I see old Sheik el-Gran’-ma’am and his bunch are still with us. You’d better assign them to guard duty right away.”

While his various orders were being carried out, Orman walked about the camp making a hurried survey. His brain was clear. Even the effects of a sleepless night were erased by this sudden emergency call on his resources. Now he approached the mess table, where he had asked the company to assemble.

They were talking excitedly about the defection of the blacks and offering various prophecies as to the future, none of which were particularly roseate. Orman overheard one remark; “It took a case of Scotch to get us into this mess; but Scotch won’t get us out of it.” He gritted his teeth.

“I couldn’t help but hear,” he said; “but I’m through with liquor. Now let's face this situation. It’s not so hopeless. We have provisions, arms, transportation. But there are dangers, because the shortest way out of the Basuto country is straight ahead, right through the midst of them!”
