'Bengal Lancer" Film Gives Gary Cooper Best of Roles in Fighting Man' Career Paramount Picture Now at Indiana Shows Actor Often Cast as Soldier in British Officer Role With Brilliant Uniforms. r: ARY COOPER, whose motion picture career has won for him the vJ title of “fighting man of all nations,’’ adds anew and more glamorous soldiering role to his extensive record m the leading role of Parau'ount s “The Lives of a Bengal Lancer,” which is now at the 'lndiana.
'.\x> young to have seen actual ur Ice in the World War, the tall, lean Montanan has worn the uniform of a half-dozen nations and fought on foot, in the air and astride a horse to become Hollywood’s most famous warrior. Coopers initiation in fighting roles came as an aviator in the film sensation, “Wings.” Then he fought as a member of the French Foreign Legion in “Beau Sabreur” and “Morocco.” For the leading role of the filmlzation of “Farewell to Arms,” Cooper pox'irayed an American in the Parian ambulance service. More recently, he has played a British Tommy in “Seven Days Leave”: an American douehboy in “The Shopworn Angel,” and a Confederate officer in “Operator 13.” In “The Lives of a Bengal Lancer,’" Cooper wears the most handsome and striking fighting plumage of his long warring career. Asa British captain of this world-famous Indian cavalry unit, his dress uniform consists of a brocaded turban and cummerbund in addition to the conventional gold braid and scarlet of the uniform coat. Cooper's role in this picture is his most heroic and engaging. In “The Lit •es of a Bengal Lancer” he goes courageously into danger to preserve his regiment from destruction and to save a soldier from realizing that his son had betrayed his trust. Franchot Tone. Richard Cromwell, Sir Guy Standing, Monte Blue, C. Aubrey Smith and Kathleen Burke arc only a few of the supporting members of the cast of this enormous adventure-spectacle which required four years of work and more than 4000 actors in filming. Adapted from the novel by Francis the picture was filmed on six separate locations, ranging from the northwestern border of India to the top of Mt. Whitney in California. Henry Hathaway directed "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer.” nan Rogers Movie Remains “The County Chairman,” produced by Fox Films, with the inimitable Will Rogers in the starring role, is appearing in its third consecutive week on the screen of the Apollo Theater. This circumstance makes “The i County Chairman” comparable in popularity with Rogers’ previous successes, “Hardy Andy,” “David Harum” and “Judge Priest.” Will Rogers, who has played an amazing variety of homespun characters, appears at last in a role for which he is best suited of all—a politician. In real life Rogers is thought to be well informed and is a keen student of politics, but until he made “The County Chairman” he never has had th" opportunity to create such a character on the stage or screen. “The County Chairman,” a screen adaptation of the famous stage comedy of the same title by one of America's foremost humorists. j lage life was more colorful and isolated than It is today. Many of the situations and speeches made 'ey Rogers in the picture are his ovn policies and things he has talked about over the radio. A notable supporting cast Is fea- | tured with Rogers, including such weli-known screen favorites as Kent Taylor, Stepin Fetchlt, Evelyn Venable, Louise Dresser and Mickey Rooney. Short subjects and the latest views of world happenings as picturized by Fox Movietone Nows round out the program. nun Big Movie at Palace Ann Harding and Robert Montgomery are co-starred in the new photoplay, "Biography of a Bachei lor Girl,” at Loew’s Palace. Ann has the role of a portrait painter who has had quite a lot of boy friends in the past and who j scares them all to death when she decides to write the story of her life. Montgomery as the editor who presses her to write the book, finds j himself surrounded on all sides by persons who will find their lives and careers somewhat embarrassed if their admiration for the lovely artist came to light in print. Among these are Edward Everett Horton in the role of Nolan, prospective Senator. And Edward Arnold as Deyfak, the musician. Others in the supporting cast include Una Merkey, Greta Meyer, and Charles Richman in the role he created on the stage in the play titled “Biography.” E. H. Griffith, connected with Miss Harding for many years, having directed her first screen success, “Holiday,” and later “Animal Kingdom,” directed the film for I Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer under the production seal of Irving Thalberg. Adf.ed to the program will be a ChPiiev Chase comedy, “Fate’s Fatnead”; another of Mickey Mouse's latest adventures, “The Dognapper,” and Edwin C. Hill in Hearst Metrotone News.

Upper Left—Josephine Hutchinson after leaving the legitimate stage has been advancing rapidly on the screen. She is shown here in a scene from “The Right to Live” with Henrietta Crossman and George Brent. The picture is now on view at the Lyric. Upper Right—lrene Dunne makes a charming picture in “Sweet Adeline,” which is now on view at the Circle.
Meroff Heads Bill at Lyric Radio Orchestra and Lavish Revue Occupy Stage. In Benny Meroff and his famous NBC orchestra, supplemented with Meroff’s own lavish and colorful revue the Lyris theater is presenting another outstanding stage attraction for the week continuing through next Thursday. The screen feature is "The Right to Live,” an important addition to the highly successful screen dramas by W. Somerset Maughm, who wrote “Os Human Bondage.” Known as "Eddie Cantor's playmate” by reason of his long association with Cantor in the latter’s radio programs, Benny Meroff is not only one of the most popular, but also one of the most versatile,'stage personalities now before the public. An able and talented orchestra leader, he takes time out from conducting his musicians to sing, dance, juggle and impersonate celebrities of the stage and screen with an ease and sureness that betokens a real artist. Containing a number of renowned Instrumental specialty stars, Meroff's orchestra, is, of course, the predominating ingredient of the stage show. The show includes an array of Broadway stars, among them being Florence Gast, who has graced Ziegfeld s "Follies” and who was with A1 Jolson in "Bombo”; Dolly Bell, acknowledged to be the world’s greatest acrobatic dancer; Red Pepper and Jack Marshall, “Benny’s Bad Little Boys”; Jay Hill, radio tenor; Helen O'Shea, premier danseuse, and the Coffie sisters, "Three Little Sweethearts of the Air.” George Brent and Josephine Hutchinson have the stellar roles in •The Right to Live,” supported by Colin Clive. Peggy Wood, Henrietta Crossman. C. Aubrey Smith and a notable cast. The story deals with a daring and unusual theme in which a beautiful young woman is confronted by the problem of whether she has the right to live her own life, to love and be happy, or to remain with her hopelessly crippled Inland. It is filled with intense emotional situations leading to a startling climax. Entertaining short subjects complete the screen program. Star Writes Music In addition to her four novels and several short stories, Elissa Landi, Paramount star, has written the lyrics for four published songs.

Donald Woods, who plays the leading role opposite Irene Dunne in the Warner Bros, production, "Sweet Adeline,” which is now on view at the Circle, is only 28, but he has two Broadway successes to his credit, one road tour and seven stock engagements, including" romantic leads, with Elitch’s Garden Stock. Ever since he went on the stage, Donald has had as many mothers as there were women in the troupe. He is 6 feet 1 inch in height, with dark brown hair and eyes and a face like Otto Cushing used to draw on his Roman soldiers. The Little Theater groups captured him first, but the temptation to conquer the world soon took him to the commercial theater. He played in Salt Lake City, San Antonio, Houston, Toledo, Indianapolis, Washington and Denver. In New York, he won his spurs in “Singapore” and “Social Register.” Among those with whom he has appeared are Edna Hibbard, Suzanne Caubot, Mrs. Leslie Carter, Guy Bates Post and Irene Purcell. In
