ALVIN KARPIS, 'DOC' BARKER NEXT ON LIST U. S. Agents Go Gunning for Last Remaining Pair of Desperadoes. Ay T'nit'4 Prnta . WASHINGTON. Jan. 17—Uncle Sam carved two more notches in his gun today, filled his belt again with shrapnel shells and went hunting for the list remaining pair of major gangsters at large in America. The rest were behind bars, under sod, or on the coroner's slab as the nation's most intensive drive against crime reached a spectacular crescendo. Only the capture or death of Alvin Karpis and Arthur R. <Doc> Barker remained to complete the Government's round-up of big-time desperados, who were cutting a swath or robber, murder and abduction through the Mid-West last year. Slay Outlaw, Mother The agents of the Department of Justice are close upon- the trail of A1 and the "Doc” who organized an underworld corridor stretching from Minnesota to Texas. The “Doc's” brother Fred and their mother were slain yesterday during a five-hour gun battle in Florida with Federal operatives. The 65-year-old “Ma,” whose hair was dyed a jet black, died with a machine gun still hot in her hands. With Mrs. Barker out of the way, Federal officers believe capture of her other son and Karpis was imminent. The agents said the gang never would have survived as long as it did had it not been for "Ma’s” brains.
Underworld on Run She and her pasty-faced younger son followed in death a list of public enemies which grew more impressive almost week by week, as the Government’s battle against the underworld gained momentum. The operatives, under J. Edgar Hoover, chief of the bureau of investigation, first captured Frank Nash, Harvey Bailey. "Machine Gun” Kelly and Albert Bates, as vicious a quartet, perhaps, as ever engaged in crime. They also caught many a lesser desperado, but the crime wave early last year seemed to continue unabated. So the Federal officers changed their methods. They began to shoot to kill. In quick succession they mowed down John Dillinger, “Pretty Boy” Floyd and “Baby Face” Nelson. Local and state authorities emulated the straight-shooting Federal men. They shot and killed Clyde Barrow, and his cigar smoking paramour, Bonnie Parker. They they slew Tommie Carroll and Homer Van Meter. That brought results. The crime tide turned. The underworld was put to rout. Labor Union to Lobby The Central Labor Union of Indianapolis filed a petition to lobby in this session of the General Assembly at the office of the Secretary of State yesterday.

Where Is Thy Sting? Dillinger Death Mask Has Place of Honor in Edgai Hoover’s Office.
Hy L nitrd Prrnt WASHINGTON. Jan. 17.—Visitors with jittery nerves and easily upset stomachs had best arrange to meet Director J. Edgar Hoover of the Justice Departments investigation division out in the corridor next time they go to see him.
For in the center of Director Hoover’s suave, ultra-modern reception room, with its soft blue carpet, soft blue leather chairs ! and gleaming chromium trim is a glass show case. There in the center of the case where all eyes are inevitably attracted lies John Dillinger’s head. a a a VTOT really John Dillinger’s head, of course, but enough like it to give the unwary caller something of a shock. Actually it's John Dillinger’s death mas£ and has the place of honor in Director Hoover’s collection of public enemy curios. The mask is pure white plaster. The eyes are shut, the face in repose with just a hint of a smile about the lips. The moustache is well trimmed. It looks like the face of some small haberdasher's clerk. On one side of the face there is the impression of a small round hole. This was made by a bullet, one of those with which Mr. Hoover's men ended the outlaw's career. tt an T YING in the showcase around the death mask are other tokens of the gunman's end. There is the gun the agents found in his pocket, the gold rimmed glasses he was wearing, his straw hat spotted with a small stain of blood. There is also the cigar he clutched in his hand as he went dowm under the Federal volley. Mr. Hoover is very proud of the display. He had the death mask made up specially as the crowning feature of his museum. C. M. T. C. CAMP TO OPEN HERE JULY 10 Ft. Harrison to Be Scene of Only Session in Fifth Area. NEED A GOOD CHIEF OF POLICE? CHUCK’S VERY MAN FOR YOU
Chuck Wiggins, pugilistic nemesis of the Indianapolis Police Department, was attempting to prove to a group of friends, gathered in front of Police Headquarters, that he should be police chiqf. Using a logic found more often in the academy than in the squared circle, Chuck said: "Tommy and Mike Gibbons, Jim Maloney, Tim O’Neel, Pat and Tim McMahan, Batt Halstead and Jack Leslie fall former fighters) are either sheriffs or coppers. I've licked them all; thus fquod est demonstratum) I should be police chief.” Reflecting on these words the famed "Hoosier Playboy” added: “If Mike Morrissey heard me say this, he’d have me arrested before nightfall.”

ROAD MEASURES ARE DISCUSSED BY COMMITTEE Elimination of 227 Miles of Highway From State System Urged. Recommended amendments to the state highway laws would permit the State Highway Commission, with the approval of the Governor, to eliminate 227 miles of roads from the state highway system. This mileage, the House Roads Committee was told, never has been maintained by the sate, and would revert to the counties if eliminated from the state system. Evan Stotsenberg, State Highway Commissioner, also recommended
