'CROOKS LOBBY' LAUDS BILL TO CURB PISTOLS ‘Makes Nice Picking for Us,’ Says Letter Read to House. The "Indiana crooks" lobby, not personally represented in Statehouse corridors, today wrote a letter to Rep. Moris H. Coers <D.. Indianapolis), thanking him for his introduction of a bill banning the possession of pistols and revolvers. "We crooks of Indiana,” said a letter read from the rostrum by Speaker Edward H. Stein, "thank you for the disarmament bill.* This bill makes nice picking for us. Good citizens will be afraid to carry pistols or have one around. We are holding a meeting now and drinking a toast to you.” Republican and Democratic members laughed heartily. The bill, introduced jointly by Reps. Coers, Martin J. Downey (D., Hammondi and Frank G. Thompson <D., BSuffton), with administration approval, provides strict regulations for the purchase, sale and custody of weapons. Mere possession of a weapon at the time a crime of violence is committed would be made prima facie evidence of intent to use the weapon in commission of a felony, and fines up to SIOOO and imprisonment from one to ten years are provided. Persons previously convicted of a crime of violence would not be permitted to own a pistol and dealers would be required to report purchases to chiefs of police within six hours after sales. Public display or advertising of pistols would be prohibited, and pawn dealers would be prohibited from taking them as security for loans. Coal Tax Proposed A 5-cent tax on each ton of strip mine coal produced in Indiana and marketed in the state was proposed in a bill introduced yesterday in the House by William H. Lee (D., Princeton), Bennett H. Rockey <D., Sharpsville) and Lee E. Shafer (D., Royal Center). Revenue would go to the Conservation Department for use in leveling and reforesting the strip mine territory and for reforestation anywhere in the state. Salaries Are Studied Legislative leaders today prepared to study alleged inequalities in the salaries of county officers in preparation for the introduction of amendments to the State salary law. Recorders are reported seeking' salary increases because of additional work imposed by Federal loan laws, and sheriffs want additional fees for county patrol work. Legislators Are Feted Almost 100 members of the General Assembly last night were guests of the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce and the Indiana Commercial Secretaries Association at a Columbia Club dinner. Gov. Paul V. McNutt also attended.

The discovery of the marked similarity of appearance between Frank Scanlon, Menlo Park, N.
