IT'S ‘COLORFUL’ TRIAL. WOMEN IN CASE LEARN Descriptive Labels Given Feminine Figures at Flemington. BY JANE DIXON f*reo Mali (nrrvpnn|nl FLEMINGTON. N. J.. Jan. 15. In the heat of action and under dramatic pressure, women In the Hauptmann trial have taken on colorful labels. These labels are oy no means an Index to the character of the women who wear them. They are not always, in the true sense of graphic art, descriptive.
The most that can be said for them is that they are arresting. The first of the labels to carom through the courtroom and find its way into world-wide avenues of newes was “the woman in green.” The woman in green xs a Long Island housewife, introduced spectacularly by Hauptmann's lawyers to confound Dr. John F. <Jafsie Condon. "The woman in green” appeared for a moment before the witness chair where Jafsie was testifying and was whisked away before a startled courtroom could catch its breath. She waits in the wings for a more fulsome entrance. Asa companion piece of "the woman in green” is "a woman named White.” For the nonce "the woman named White" will remain a mystery. She received a mere mention in the testimony but the mention was portentious. At any moment she may be projected as a principal. There is ‘ Hildegarde the beautiful cloak model.” Hildegarde Alexander is beautiful but she models pajamas and negligees. She attests she saw Bruno Richard Hauptmann holding watch on Dr. Condon in a Bronx railroad station while the .•ducator was negotiating with the Kidnaper. A newspaper woman is called "the red disaster” because she wears a red hat and scarf and crashes in where more seasoned • press representatives fear to tread. The most significant of the labels that have been pasted on feminine brows is worn by "the girl on the j flying trapeze.” The girl with t,his : label was not invested with it. She won it. Her first name is Norma and she is the daughter of an under-sheriff of Hunterdon County. Norma is a messenger girl for the United Press. She is very young, very husky, and her intrepidity is the marvel of one and all. With a sweep of her arms she can brush a half dozen of her boy colleagues out of the way and down the. steps onto the # next, landing.

STATE BUDGET BILL TO FACE HOUSE DELAY Financial Proposals Will Not Be Ready Until Late This Month. The state budget bill probably will not be ready for introduction until the end of January. Rep. Hardin S. Linke 'D„ Columbus. chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, which will handle the finance legislation in the lower house, today said he did not expect the state's financial advisors will be ready to submit their recommendations until that time. The reversal by the Governor's Commission on Tax Revisiorx of its early decision to recommend virtual abolishment of the emergency provisions of the local lax limitation statutes, was taken to mean thr the state conferees believe it may be necessary *o reduce state general fund expenses by diminishing the proportion of licence fees now shared with the counties. To deprive the local governments of anticipated state apportionments of funds would require flexibility in the tax levying powers of the local governments, it was pointed out. The Tax Revision Commission’s decision to leave the Gross Income Tax law untouched, and to refrain from recommending changes in the personal income or sales tax statutes, also wa? taken to indicate that the Governor is determined not to permit additional or higher taxes. At a recent meeting of the Commission. Clarence A. Jackson, Gross Income Tax Division Director. said the Governor was determined that thp aggregate of funds raised by taxes of all charac-
