Longs Louisiana dictatorship gained momentum today as leading citizens scattered to their homes throughout the state to call mass meetings designed to force a special session of the Legislature. They assembled here last night at a meeting sponsored by the newly born and violently anti-Long organization—the Square Deal Association. If Gov. O. K. Allen, subordinate to Long in the powerful Long political machine, refuses to issue the call the legislators will be forced to convene themselves, speakers promised. "This is not a threat but a promise,” Ernest Bourgeois, 29, who five days ago was just another unemployed man, said. Mr. Bourgeois is head of the new association which has attained a phenomenal growth since it was created last Saturday. Leading citizens from all parts of the state attended last night's meeting. Some of the audience came from remote rural sections. They had heard it was a revolution against Long and they came with shotguns. With Long in Washington, his lieutenants seemed unable to take decisive action. In New Orleans, the harassed city administration planned to continue collecting a surtax on liquor, despite a state law prohibiting it from doing so.
