A. Woman s Viewpoint .BY MRS WALTER FERGUSON

Good housekeeping magazine starts oft the New Year with a sock, at divorce. In a splendid article called "Can’t I Save My Marriage?’’ the customary matrimonial dangers are defined and analyzed. Jealousy, childlessness, money problems, lack of common Interests, drabness,l n-laws and plain selfishness— always the outstanding peril. In assuming that prevention is the only cure for divorce Dr. Hubert Howe the author gets down to fundamentals. Like all authorities however he addresses his remarks to intelligent persons aad unfortunately it is the other sort who need the advice. Asa primary course to matrimonial instruction I believe we shall have to cram one fact into the heads of the multitude. It is a fact both obvious and unavoidable. Divorce is NOT a panacea for unhappiness. It never cures discontent or heartache. On the contrary nine times out of ten it merely precipitates us from the frying pan of wretchedness into the fire of despair. It would be fatuous of course to pretend there are not many cases when divorce is the only solution for a bad matrimonial situation. But let's never forget it is the last and not a first resort —a sort of operation in which we use the knife to cut away that which will eventually destroy us. But when we speak of it as a release just what do we mean? Is It a release from sorrow caused by a hurt heart? Is it a release from parental responsibility? Is it really a release from anything deep

spiritual and abiding? Os course not. Marriage will always be civilization's most difficult problem because it is an affair of emotions instead of reason. Nearly every happy home owes its existence and permanence to but one of its creators. Sometimes it's the husband, sometimes the wife, depending upon which of the two is the more stable. For when crises come there must be one level head in the family. Two level heads can avert a crisis. You can not be certain your marriage will succeed unless you go into it willing to do a little more than your share to assure its success. It’s a hard statement but oh how true! More happy homes are built on the self-sacrifice of one than upon the co-operation of two. But what sacrifice could be for better cause? Tom Orman, late of Hollywood, cracked his lash savagely against the skins of sweating blacks as they dragged* the mammoth sound truck across a small stream. Through perilous jungle he was bound for the seething heart of Africa, to mak,e his greatest picture. Kwamucfi, headman of the black, looked on with hate.

Not far away sat Naomi Madison, who had won her way to movie stardom by a certain diplomacy that she practiced on Tom Orman, the director. “Why can’t we go on?” she inquired peev- , ishly of Rhonda Tern’, her double. “Orman’s probably afraid to separate the safari,” Rhonda replied. “He was warned of this place.”

Watching the girls—silently, patiently—were Sheik Ab el-Ghrennem and his men. “Which of them holds the secret of the Valley of Diamonds?” asked the sheik. "I am not sure.” his companion answered; “they are so much alike. But one of them has the paper.” The sheik nodded ominously. “We can bide our time.”

The eyes of Billy West, chief cameraman, were on Rhonda—through a sentimental haze. Major White, however, an old hand in Africa, gazed disapprovingly at Tom Orman, who was still swinging his lash. “We’re in for a bad time,” he said, “unless Orman changes his tactics, because . .
