M’NUTT TAX BOARD DELAYS DECISIONS Acts Wednesday on Problems Under Study. Gov. Paul V. McNutt’s special tax study commission yesterday decided to delay until next Wednesday the vote on several of the more controversial tax problems before it. These subjects include the proposed substitution of a 3 per cent retail sales tax for the present gross income tax, a proposal to increase the gross income tax rates and removal of the emergency clause from the tax limitation law. Several members of the committee of 22 are out of the city and will not return until next week. The vote was delayed until next Wednesday for this reason. The committee aproved “in principle” a proposed bill to license peddlers, solicitors and hucksters.
PASSENGERS BELIEVED LOST IN SHIP CRASH Officials Think Some Failed to Escape; 4 of Crew Missing. By United Press NEW YORK. Jan. 4.—A death toll mystery developed around the rammed and sunk coastwise liner Lexington today. Officials believed it was unlikely that all passengers escaped. Even the number aboard was uncertain, although Colonial Line officers estimated there were between 120 and 130 in the holiday crowd returning to Providence, R. 1., when the freighter Jane Christenson’s bow cut the Lexington in two. Four crew members still were listed as missing.
