Christmas Eve
BY CLARENCE HAWKES (The Blind Pcet of Hadley) (Written for the United Press) THE air is clear, the stars are bright and cold, A silence broods above the waiting earth Just as it did upon that night of old When Bethlehem beheld the Savior’s birth. It is as though all nature understood The Christ Nativity, and motherhood. r I"'HE peaceful kine are feeding in the stall, -I- The smell of hay to simple folk is sweet. Then on the night there breaks a clarion call Some boastful rooster wakening from his sleep. The moon sails through the sky, the stars grow bright— Was that the wind? Strange sounds I hear tonight. AGAIN the wind comes moaning in the boughs A weird Eolian sound—’twas like a child. And yet there is no movement from the cows. They munch their hay—their wondering eyes are mild Then why should man see angels on this night Descend to earth upon a shaft of light. TIS fancy strange, that makes the eyes to see Those wondrous things, that in the heart we hold The radiant star of Christ’s nativity, The wise men bearing frankincense and gold, Tlie shepherds sleeping in the distant field, The inn too full to e’en the Savior shield. HOW all these things come flooding back tonight! The mother in the manger with her son, That radiant star that filled the world with light And still will shine until this world is done. The Bethlehem babe, grown to a mighty King, Os Him tonight, the herald angels sing.
