A Woman's Viewpoint BY MBS. WALTER FERGUSON

We are stepping in the right direction when we get into the better homes parade. Only, for goodness sake, let's not mistake the movement to mean more handsome structures in fashionable districts. For a l°ng time our idea of better homes has been larger houses, although we should know by now that a large house can not always qualify ior the nobler title. Have you noticed when entering on of thnseimposing residences, with vast halls, elegant draperies, ankledeep rugs, expensive furniture, how the family almost Invariably gathers In the littlest comer to be found—a den. a small library, a nook, where a feeling of coziness and intimacy can be created? Sometimes they sejm to be hiding there, overcome bv the emptiness about them. The rest of the house is generally a shew place, through which visitors are conducted, Ohing and Ah-ing and awed by immensity and uselessness. Few people are ever truly happy living in palatial elegance. I’ve never understood the dreams of “dwelling in marbled halls.” The fad for big houses has done much to crush the domestic arts and the fireside loyalty in women. Some of them have been literally weighted down by the hotelllike spaciousness in which they were forced to exist, while other.* w r rre imprisoned in squalor with never a hope lor release. Women, I believe, prefer neat, cozy homes. We always have more fun in little houses than in big ones because we can help to take care of them. Estates, are managed by servants. but homes must always be maintained by the loving service [ their owners.

BRITISH meteorological office figures show that, in spite of the wide reputation of London's November fog. the average number of foggy November days, for years back, is five. Charles Dickens' “Bleak House" is typical of the novel that has helped to spread the gospel of London fog. N&XT —What animal makes haj?

J If, therefore, we hope to regain some of our lost domesticity let s fix up the small places, beautify the cottages, plane flowers In the yards of the- poor, and well see women by the thousands going back into them as soon as economic conditions make it possible. One fact I hope we never again forget. Real estate men may build better houses, but only contented women can make better homes. CITY BUILDING PERMIT VALUATIONS INCREASE 91,2*6,986 Gain Shown. Block Building Is Reason. Building permit valuations for the year, up until Dec. 15, exceed those for the same period in 1933 by 5t.24*5,936. W. S. Hurd, city buildi mg commissioner, disclosed in a report given the Safety Board yesterday. Comparative totals are $3,375,948 against $2,128,962. While only 46 permits had been isi sued up until Tec. 15 this year, against 102 for the 15-day period in 1933. valuations amounted to $30,451 against sl2 232. Construction of the new Wm. H. TARZAN AND THE CITY OF GOLD

“You refuse my love!" Nemone screamed. “You spurn me? You dare spurn the love of a Queen! And I knelt at your feet!" She sprang to one side of the room where hung a metal gong. She struck it thrice; and it brazen notes rang through the chamber.

Tarzan stood watching the Queen in her raging fury. She seemed wholly irresponsible—quite mad. This indeed was Nemone the destroyer, who killed or disfigured women that dared be more beautiful than she; who wantonly tortured men for her own fiendish pleasure.

The lord of the jungle knew it would be useless to attempt to reason with the mad Queen. Ke moved slowly toward the door. Before he reached it, however, it swung open. Immediately a score of strong, fierce warriors, accompanied by two nobles, rushed into the room.

“Take this man!” Nemone commanded. “Throw him into the cell with other enemies of the Queen.” Tarzan was ’inarmed. When he entered the ivory room he had unbuckled his sworp and laid it upon a stand near the doorway. And now twenty spears encircled him!
