BEEBE SPEAKS ON MARINE LIFE AT SEABOTTOM Experiences in Bathysphere Described by Scientist in Talk Here. In a lecture which showed a keen sense of humor as well as an almost startling abundance of scientific knowledge. Dr. William Beebe spoke last night before a large audience m B F. Keith's theater on the subject, “Five Hundred Fathoms Down." In simple language. Mr. Beebe disposed of the descriptions of the fish he observed through the quartz window of his two-ton bathysphere, in which he descended 3028 feet. The lecturer began by telling how he happened, after specializing in the study of pheasants, to get into the fish line. He started in Bermuda. near which the British government gave him an island, christened Nonsuch. Here he took over several abandoned laboratories and since has car:ied on his study, doing most of hu~ recent work in deep sea research. He started, however, working in the shallow tide pools then going down several feet where he took notes on paper and where his artist learned to work with oil paint and brushes tied to strings. They found that (some of the paints contained certain food which the fish liked and consequently these had to be poisoned with arsenic. Used Cross-Bow Mr. Beebe related how he manufactured his first underwater instrument, a crude cross-bow which shot wire arrows and with which he had to practice for some time to get used to the refractionary action of the water in order to make good his aim. Here beneath the surface he learned the eleven ways fish go to sleep. Continuing deeper into the sea. Mr. Beebe discovered peculiar relations between enemy fish. For instance, he tells the story of the red snapper, a member of the Pisces family which grows as large as two feet in length. It lives on small varieties 6uch as butterfly fish. At a certain time, Mr. Beebe said, the red snapper suspends itself in the .water, opens its mouth and allows schools of butterfly fish to eat the harnacles and parasites off the roof of its mouth, and then lets them ; swim away unmolested as payment for this service. Fish Are Blind The scientist told how at 2000 feet below the surface the water around the bathysphere became totally black, that no color was visible in fish lower than 1900 feet. He said that the pressure at that depth on the steel sphere is approximately 7000 tons. At this depth th° fish, not being able to see, either loj° their optical nerves and muscles or develop abnormal eyes, some of them growing on the ends of long antennae, reaching several inches from the body of the fish. These eyes are lit up with tiny lights which show them the way about in their strange life Mr. Beebe showed lantern slides and motion pictures of his various activities in tracing the life histories of the deep sea fish and pictures of actual specimens he has brought from the depths and which lived in the tremendously lowered pressure of the upper surface as long as two hours OHIO BANK ROBBERS GET SIO,OOO IN LOOT Bandits Brandish Ph. LAWYER TOILS IN VAIN TO GET SLOT-MACHINE Client Freed of Charge Is Blum’s Only Solace in Uphill Fight. Sam Blum worked hard for a 5cent slot machine yesterday—and didn’t have it when h 6 finished. Mr. Blum, whose offices are at 156 E. Market-st, appeared as counsel for Miss Helen Waddell, 704 N. Cap-itol-av, when she was arraigned before Howard H. Bates, Municipal Judge Pro Tem.. on charges of having a slot machine. The machine, which Police Sergeant William Marks says he found in Miss Waddell’s apartment, was down in the basement when the case was called in Muniaipal Court Three. Mr. Blum wanted it. A bailiff accompanied the lawyer down three flights of stairs to get it, but refused to help in its transportation. Mr. Blum carried the machine, no lightweight, up from the basement and along the main floor corridor, slippery with dampness tracked in from the streets. There was another flight of stairs; then, another hallway. A third flight of stairs followed PeateasteM rM BUS FARES/ 1000 cities/ Special excursions to over one thousand cities, good till Jan. 15th. and, when Mr. Blum had negotiated this and walked down a third hallway and down the courtroom aisle, he was winded and his face was red. The fact that he had not removed his light tan topcoat before he started hadn't helped. His first question established the fact that Sergeant Marks had no search warrant when he. visited Miss Waddell’s apartment. This resulted in dismissal of the charges against Miss Waddell. “I would like the machine now, if the court pleases,” Mr. Blum said “It is the property of my client.” “It is not,” spoke up Sergeant Marks. “It is the property of the police department and should go right straight back to the basement.” The court, which seemed inclined to agree with Sergeant Marks, asked Mr. Blum to provide some legal citations tending to show that the machine belonged to his client. Mr. Blum said he would have to look them up. “Well,” said Judge Bates, “supposing you carry the machine into the judge’s chambers and leave it there until you can find the citations.”
