“1 VE earned it." quoth brave Mr. X Wilson of Hollywood In petitioning for 81000-a-month alimony from his divorced wife. ‘Seven years of my life have been wasted in society. It was always dinner, or golf, or tennis, Bermuda or Havana.” On such a score, his claim seems neither unreasonable nor excessive. The precursor of the modern carnivals merry-go-round was a cumbersome contraption called the “Flying Jinny,' pushed by a small mule that plodded in an endless circle. When a very little girl, a.s I hurled myself gleefully into the swinging seat, riding on the crest of a never-to-be-forgotten thrill, that mule made a dent in my consciousness that remains one of the vhr*4 memories of childhood. What we call society is something very like that Flying Jinny, and it is often propelled by the donkey typ of mind. Seven years sacrificed from an average lifetime ~pon the aimless pursuits required to keep one shming in that hallowed circle oueht to be well recompensed. For the poor little ass in Flying Jinny was never more a slave than those women who pace their eternal rounds from bridge table to tea table; from luncheons to dinners; from winter resort to summer playground. I don’t know what some of them are going to do when and if they gpt into Heaven, where, we are assured. no circles will exist into which the rich and high-born may congregate. Yet I have known some who would have patronized the saints themselves, since their names are

A trumpet sounded. The procession began to move, followed by the excited citizenry on holiday. One chariot bore the hide bag that contained the intended victim of the volcano. Behind it walked Thudos and Gemnon in chains, for it was Nemone’s wish that they witness Doria's fate. ’

At Nemone’s command, the cruel, barbaric ceremonies began. No sound or move 'came from the grim sack as two priests lifted it from the chariot and set it down at the feet of the Queen. Such was the custom, before the victim should be hurled into the flames and molten lava below.
