A Woman's Viewpoint BY MRS WALTER FERGLSON
HAPPILY amid the turmoil of Use the reading of books goes on, a perpetual pleasure for sane people. So when there comes from a woman s club the request that this column mention those things lately read, the reply Is immediate, although the request for my opinion of Gertrude Stem's peculiar prose will get no enlightening answer. Miss Stein may have something important to say to the world, but i am unable to understand it. My book of the month is John Cowper Powys’ autobiography, with not a woman In it. Why I love what this half-mad Powys writes 1 can not explain. But his books are events for me. adventures into a faintly lit world of the spirit where woros become magic weapons anG ideas both noble and fantastic rise like ghosts behind the pages. Ever since I first saw the man on a lecture platform and witnessed an awkward, hesitant, stammering being suddenly begin talking as an inspired angel might, I have missed nothing he writes. Next is Hans Failada's •‘The World Outside," not so good as “Little Man, What Now?” although Pinnebcrg and Willi Kulalt are types that stand forever knocking at the closed heart of the world. If you want courage for a downcast spirit, get Anne Shannon Monroe’s "Walk With Me. Lad,” and for word beauty Josephine Johnson's “Now in November.” “Morning Shows the Day," by Helen Hull, is a little hard on mothers, but a jolt now and then is good for us. The third volume of the NordofT and Hall series. “Pitcairn's Island,” brings again the flavor of salt sea. For poetry, Edna

St. Vincent Millay's “Wine from These Grapes” is here, but I like better some of her earlier things. "Don t miss “Father Goose,” by the raucous Mr. Fowler, or that sad saga of an Osage boy, “Sundown,’ by John Joseph Mathew*'., or Elsie Robinson's cocktail glow for women. “I Wanted Out.” A combination of I history and ideas is “Erasmus ot Rotterdam" by that master of proee. Stefan Zweig. Oh, yes, also J. B Priestley’s “English Journey,” a delightful, chatty volume crammed with information. On my list, you will notice, there are no murder mysteries. I regard them with a deep, dark, deadly hatred. CLUB FEDERATION ASKS CONTINUATION OF HOLC North Side Group Resolves Unit Should Be Continued. TAR/AN AND THE CITY OF COLD
| f”i. 'Vi
It was early morn when the cortege formed to accompany the doomed Doria to Xarator. That sacred volcano lies sixteen miles from the City of Gold, and the procession could move no faster than the lions drawing the Queen’s chariot could walk, and that was not fast. The start awaited Nemone’s arrival.

THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES
The journey was long, and it would be past nightfall before they returned; so hundreds of slaves bore torches to light the homeward march. Nemone, the Queen, entered her chariot. She was wrapped in woolen robes and animal skins to ward off the chill of the morning air.

By her side was Tomos, nervous and ill at ease. He knew that M’duze was dead, and wondered if he would be next. The Queen s manner was curt and abrupt, filling him with dread; for there was no M’duze to protect him from the easily aroused wrath of Nemone. She turned suddenly upon him.

“Where is Tarzan?” she demanded. “I do not know, Majesty,” Tomos replied with a shrug. *1 have not seen him.” Nemone looked at him sharply. “Don’t lie to me!” she snapped. “You do know where he is; and if any harm has befallen him, you go to the lion pit!” Her eyes blazed.
