A Womans Viewpoint BI MRS. WALTER FERGUSON
THE people who are alarmed at the thought of Government Interference in caring for children apparently fall to keep up with current news of parental negligence. In this respect the rich and poor child w 5 found in the last stages are running a close race. In ray New York a 2-year-old of starvation with her parents in the la t stages of Intoxication. In Columbus. 0.. a 2-month.s-old girl rescued from a rubbish heap was advertised for adoption, which as we might advertise an abandoned puppy. In Miner.*! Wells, Tex., a day-old Infant left on a residence doorstep died from exposure. From California we read, “Three Children Abandoned by Mother In Railroad Station." Form Colorado, "Boy, 13, Shows Bruises Left From Father's Lashings.” In IndianapolLs a woman is alleged to have burned her daughter with a curler. Not a day passes but somewhere such sordid stories appear. Yet we're forever talking about ours being a country for the young. A little lews self-praise and a little more investigation are in order. Did you know the child labor movement still needs action by 16 States before it goes into the Constitution; that our immigration laws still can tear the bread-winner out of his home and ship him back to Europe, leaving his wife and children to starve; that in several States where so-called mothers’ pensions exist a woman is given as little as $6 a month for herself and i several babies? I have no desire to pose as a reformer. nor do I know just how we’re going to improve on present

! plans. But improve them we must. As the list of criminals under 25 increases every year, some hard thinking on this problem is necessary. It seems to me that enough Government interference to assure food, shelter and half-decent bringing up for all'children would be a mighty Christian kind of radicalism. TARZAN AND THE CITY OF GOLD
Doria lay imprisoned in the Temple, well aware that she awaited death or disfigurement. Yet she did not weep, for above her grief rose the pride of her noble blood. But tears almost came when she thought of her lover, Gemnon; for she knew the sorrow her fate would bring him.

Presently she heard footsteps. The door opened. A man entered bearing a torch. It was Erot, the Queen's discarded favorite. “Ah. the lovely Doria!” he exclaimed maliciously. “What ill fate has brought you here?” “I know very well it was you who sent me here," the girl replied. She spoke contemptuously.

“Yes, and it wad£f who sent Gemnon to the same cell with your gather,” Erot gloated. Doria gasped, for she had not known that her lover, too, was imprisoned. “They used to sneer at me,” he continued, “but they will not sneer for long.” The girl paled. “But what is to become of us?” she asked.

“Nemone has decreed that you are to be thrown into Xarator, the flaming volcano,” Erot answered with a leer. “You are even now lying on the skins into which you are to be sewn. It is for that purpose I am here. My good friend Tomos, 'the councillor, sent me to sew you into the bag!”
