IURAL AID TO LOOM LARGE IN RELJEFJETOP 1,000.000 Families to Be Self-Supporting Under Hopkins’ Idea. By Cnited Cress WASHINGTON. Dec. 7. Relief agencies are not forgetting t’ie farmer in their plans for 1935. In addition to the millions of dollars to be paid out by the Agricultural Adjustment Administration, rural sections are exacted to benefit from widespread improvement* financed through the Public Works Administration and a rural rehabilitation project under consideration by the relief administration. Intimation that an enlarged rural rehabilitation program will be forthcoming next year was given by Harry L. Hopkins. Relief Administrator. The plan already has aided some 200.000 farmers and worked so well in Georgia that it may be made an important part of 1935 plans. It could be enlarged. Hopkins said, tg take almost 1,000.000 families off federal relief rolls. The feature, attractive to Administration leaders, is that it would cost the Government practically nothing. Farmers would be loaned enough money to start working their land, then pay it back. Mr. Hopkins estimated the rural plan could help about 500.000 farmers already established in the rural sections, and some 500.000 family heads with agricultural background who migrated to cities. The latter half-million could be, he pointed out, moved back to the country, set up on small plots of land, loaned enough cash to build small houses, buy cows and start supporting their families.
