LEGION DENIES POLITICAL LINK WITH MACNIDER Presidential Ambitions of Ex-Chief Not Fostered, Say Leaders. Reports that an attempt is being made to use the American L/'gion a. a vehicle for the presidential ambitions of Hanford MacNider, of lowa in 1936 are met with stout denials by lemon spokesmen. Mr MacNider. former United Bates minister to Canada and conservative Republican, has been discussed in many quarters as the possible Republican nominee in 1936. Be-h the lowa and Kanvas delegations at the national convention of the legion in Miami were using his name in connetcion with the next presidential race. Mr. MacNider also is reported to have been sounding out various legion key men" to see what their reaction to his candidacy wrjiild be. Legion spokesmen here said it was impossible for Mr MacNider s name to have been mentioned as a presidential candidate, at the conferences of department commanders and adjutants at legion headquarters here last week. ' I was going to say almost impossible but 111 make it impossible-,” one legion spokesman ;-aid. *'lf sueh a matter had been brought up. it immediately would have been declared out of order and the devil would have been raised about it. "The legion from the beginning has opposed participation in politics and the constitutional declaration was reaffirmed by resolution at Miami. "The legion would not suppress discussion of Mr MacNider s name because it involved Mr. MacNider." he continued, "but because such discussion would be suppressed during any legion assembly regardless of the idlvtdual." Mr. MacNider long has been credited with being a power in legion affairs, although many prominent legionnaires declare his prestige has waned.
