Solution to Previous Contract Problem BY \V. E. M KENNEY, Secretary, American Bridge League TT was only a few years ago. in the days of auction, when no suit was considered biddable unless it was at least five cards in length, today, in contract bridge, four-card suits play an lmpo&ant part and. occasionally, you are required to bid a three-card suit. Today's hand was played last summer in the women's pair event of the national championship tournament of the American Bridge League. Miss Anna May Goldfarb, Brooklyn, who received top on the board, was able to arrive at the four-spade contract because of her original bid of one spade. Now. of course, it isn t customar* to open four-card suits as weak as this, but Miss Goldfarb did not like opening the hand with a bid of one no trump, as her hand did not contain any tenace positions. Os course, after ther original one spade bid, the bidding is normal. a a a PLAY of the hand was not difficult, but simply required establishing the thirteenth club for a diamond discard. West opened the queen of hearts.

which was won by declarer with the ace. The six of spades was led, West played the deuce, declarer played the five-spot from dummy, and was surprised when her six of spades held the trick. Now, of course, she has located the king, queen and jack of spades in the West hand. She next started the club suit, playing the ace, then a small club and going up with the king in dummy. The nine of clubs was returned and won with the queen by East. This set up a good club in dummy. The six of hearts was returned and declarer won it with the king. Then she led a small diamond, w inning in dummy with the ace. The good eight of clubs was returned and the losing eight-spot of diamonds was discarded. West ruffed with the jack of spades, which was won in dummy w ith the ace. A small diamond was returned, on which declarer played the king. The only other trick West could win was the queen of spades, and Miss Goldfarb made her contract of four spades. 'Copvright. 1934. NEA Service. Inc.)
