Wisconsin Welcomes Old Grid Star—Pat O’Dea Famed Kicker Who Changed His Name to Escape Football Fame Returns to School Where He Starred.

Ji'y f niti il Prem* CHICAGO. Nov. 15— University of Wisconsin alumni turned out en masse today to welcome a ghost—Pat O’Dea, greatest of Wisconsin football players and one of the most celebrated kickers of all time, who for sixteen years was believed dead.

O'Dea was scheduled to arrive in Chicago this morning from Westwood, Cal., where since the war he has lived under an assumed name in order to evade the adulation given a football star. He will be feted and feasted in Chicago today. Saturday he will be guest of honor at a game between Wisconsin and Illinois. All of next week he will be stared at on the University of Wisconsin campus, where legends of his prowess back in the nineties have made him a veritable Paul Bunyan.

In one game, on a muddy field and in a heavy rain, he won a Wisconsin victory by drop-kicking a goal from his own 37-yard line. O'Dea sought oblivion under his assumed name because his football fame interfered with his law practice in San Francisco. He and his wife went to Westwood, where Pat shed his identity and started life again as a lumberjack. He now is a company executive. A San Francisco sports writer discovered him.
