West plays the four spot and East wins the trick with the king. East then returns the six of hearts. Should the declarer take the finesse? Well, let’s start to count. He has won a spade trick, he is going to make three club tricks, that’s four; he has two sure diamond tricks, that’s six, and of course if he could make three heart tricks that would be nine. But East already has shown up with the ace and king of spades and the king of clubs. He was not vulnerable and made no attempt to get in the bidding. Therefore, isn’t it reasonable to suppose that he does not hold the king of hearts, or even the queen of diamonds? The declarer should know that if he plays the small heart. West is going to win with the king and cash two spades, and the contract will be defeated two tricks. The proper play is for the declarer to go up with the ace. cash his three club tricks, lead adiamond and win with the king and then take the diamond finesse. As you expected, it works, and so all the diamonds are good, and the contract is made. Don’t be too anxious to take a finesse; count your winners. (Copvrisht. 1934. NEA Service.
