HEAVY G. 0. P. VOTE REPORTED; RECORD LIKELY Democrats Show Strength in North Side Wards, t Leaders Say. (Continued From Pace One) shown by comparison with the registration figures in the various precincts. The average percentage after two hours and a half of balloting was 19 per cent. This percentage crept to 21 per cent in some precincts of the Republican Twenty-first ward. Since 19 per cent seemed to dominate in the early returns, it was indicated that approximately 46.000 votes had been cast by 8:30 a. m. Voting was proceeding heavily in the First precinct of the Eighteenth ward, home precinct of Senator Arthur R Robinson, the Republican nominee for United States senator. Os the total registration in this precinct 27 per cent had voted by 9 a. m Meanwhile, eve of the election last night found both state chairmen outwardly optimistic about today’s results. While Omer Stokes Jackson, state Democratic chairman, placed no estimate on the probable majority of the Democratic success, he declared he believed all of the twelve Indiana seats in the lower hou.->e of congress were safe and that Sherman Minton. Democratic nominee for United States senator, would win easily. Mr. Jackson said the size of the Democratic majority is dependent solely on the number of persons who go to the polls and that the larger the turnout, the larger the Minton margin may become. The Democratic state chairman also predicted inroads would be made on county and city offices formerly held by Republicans. An equally optimistic view was expressed by Don Irwin. Republican state chairman, who predicted many Democrats would join Republicans in a rebuke to what he termed the high-handedness of the state administration. The G. O. P. state chairman said he realized his party was fighting against heavy odds because the Democrats were so well financed. *’l still am confident that the electorate of Indiana can not be bought, however." he declared. Governor Paul V. McNutt closed
