Bf VniU4 Prrn NEW YORK Nov I—Organized l*bor. claiming signs of victory in Its Cleveland chain store dispute, today demanded higher a ages and other adjustments by eastern chain operators A delegation representing the giocery chain stores executives and employe , association sought an appointment with John Griffith, executive vice-president of the James Butler grocery system, to present their demands They said that the Butler company, which operates 665 stores and employes 2 000 managers and clerk.-, would be the first of all the chain •tores to be approached by the association affiliated with a member of the American Federation of Labor. Officials of the Butler company expressed surprise at the association's demands, insisting the employes “were satisfied with their treatment by us and haw made no complain's , “We have heard nothing about this demand and consequently can not say what action will be taken,' Edward Farrel, manager of the Chain, said. He did not disclose Whether officials would receive the union delegation headed by R. D Denise, eastern representative of the Retail Clerks International Protective Association, with which the grocery union is affiliated. Denise told the United Pres that presentation of the contract, demanding a 25 per c*nt pay increase, two weeks’ vacation and certain changes in methods of store operations, hinged upon the appointment with company officials. CAPPER FLAYS PACKERLOBBIES Senator Says Evile Takes Money From Nation’s Livestock Men. fly T'nitrit Prtn TOPEKA, Kan., Nov. I—Senator Arthur Capper in a letter made public by D. M. Hidebrand, president of the United States Livestock Assocation. declared that the packing industry is taking money from pockets of the nation's livestock producers with which to maintain themselves on a “special privileged basis.” Capper stated the expense of maintaining lobbies in Washington unquestionably represents just another cost which the livestock producer must bear in the form of lower priced meat animals. “I hold no hostility toward the packers,” Capper said in his letter. “No one can rightfully object to r he packers, or any one else registering their opposition to proposed legislation so long as such opposition is not based on misrepresentation of the legislation itself or ol the facts as presented in support of it. “The paekars are a necessary phase of the livestock and meat industry. They are just as much an integral part, and are as indispensable to that industry as are the productions and marketing phases of the business. “It is hoped, therefore, that the time will come when the packing interests will recognize the fallacy of exploiting producers and will be willing to co-operate with other agencies in working out the problems of the industry to the mutual benefit of all concerned. “Until such a time, the only recourse which the livestock producer has is to seek such protection as he may secure through legislative channels.”

Elmore Dixon, president of the Hod-Carriers local union, No. 120, today denied that he ever has indorsed the candidacy of Walter President, Coffin mayoral candidate, Statements to this effect appeared recently in certain Indianapolis newspapers, Mr. Dixon said. The union president said that at no time has he indorsed any candidate of any party for any office, and that as president of the union, he is not authorized to make any indorsements.
