GLORIA PREFERS HER AUNT. SHE ADVISES JUDGE Vanderbilt Child Is Witness in Suit Brought by Her Mother.
Bv United Prrtu NEW YORK, Oct. 25—Little Gloria Vanderbilt prefers her aunt, Mrs. Harry Payne WTiitney, to her mother. She made this emphatically clear in a three-hour visit with Supreme Court Justice John F. Carew, who Is presiding: over trial of Mrs. Gloria Morgan Vanderbilts suit to regain custody of the 10-year-old child from Mrs. Whitney, h*r sister-in-law. Justice Carew previously had said the child's preference would have considerable weight in his decision. Gloria's visit was unheralded and attended by much secrecy. Everything had been prepared to provide as natural a setting as passible. The entire sixth floor corridor of the supreme court building, where the judge's chambers are located, was isolated. Court attendants plied photographers and reporters with an abundance of misinformation so news gatherers found themselves some place else when Gloria was t3ken before Justice Carew. Only counsel for the opposing sides and an unobtrusive stenographer were present during the interview.
Recites Her Prayers Gloria sat on a leather-backed swivel chair next to Justice Carew, who talked to her in a kindly, informal way, like an uncle. She swung her thin, frail legs and rocked in the chair as she told about the days she spent with her mother in London and Paris. There wasn't much she remembered of those places except that she had no one to play with except her nurse. Nurse didn’t know many games. She did remember vividly the last tw’o years—the years she has lived with Mrs. Whitney at Old Westbury, L. I. Not only did she have cousins of her own ae to play with, but a pony. And she talked enthusiastically of school. She told the judge what she was studying. She recited “Now I lay me down to sleep.” and the Lord's prayer of the Episcopal church, as well as the “Hail'Mary” of the Roman Catholic church. Justice Carew nodded approvingly. Her recital was letter perfect. Mother to Testify Gloria was baptized in the Episcopal church shortly after her birth. It was her father's faith. A year later, after her father died, she w*as baptized in the Roman Catholic church, her mother’s faith. Mrs. Whitney is an Episcopalian, but she said she had no objections to rearing the child as a Catholic. As for her mother. Gloria said she did not dislike her. but she had seen very little of her. She made

it plain—even emphatic—that she did not want to leave Mrs. Whitney. While Gloria and the judge conversed. Mrs. Whitney sat in a nearby room with her daughter, Mrs. G. MacCulluch Miller. Mrs. Vanderbilt was not present, because, her attorney said, she was suffering from heart trouble due to the strain of court sessions. But her two sisters, ladv Furness and Mrs. Benjamin Thaw, as well as her brother, Harry Hays Morgan, and Prince Gottfried Zu Hnhenlohe. whose name has been linked with Mrs. Vanderbilt, waited in another room. Mrs. Vanderbilt will testify as the first witness in her own behalf.
