PURVIS, ‘DEATH SUQAD' LEADER, DISLIKESTASKS Hates Publicity and Has Case of Nerves After Major ‘Jobs.’ By Vnitrd Prrii CHICAGO, Oct. 24 If Melvin Purvis were a western sheriff he probably would carve on his antique single-action revolver today two of the biggest notches in history.. In three months Mr. Purvis has led squads of federal agents which killed John Dillinger and Charles (Pretty Boy) Floyd. But there won't be any notches on Mr. Purvis’ gun. because the 31-year-old nemesis of outlaws hates ostentation, dislikes even mild publicity and has a bad case of nerves after every major “Job.” He'd like to forget that his guns have taken human lives, and he wishes otter peonle would. Mr Purvis is red-headed. Otherwise he looks—and Is—evprvthing except the traditional bloodhound of the law. Slightly built, blue eyed, studious and modest, Mr. Purvis belies all conceptions of a “bad man.” His principal hobby, it is true, is guns j and target practice. But he's equally fond of a romp in the evening with his bet spaniel or of hours with tomes on law and economics. Talks With Southern Drawl He talks with a rich, southern drawl, relic of days on the Timmonsville <S. C > plantation, where he was born and where his parents still live. Mr. Purvis probably will go here next week to rest. He spent several weeks in that peaceful atmosphere after he and his men brought down John Dillinger, ace of middlewestern outlaws, in a Chicago street battle. Mr. Purvis does not recollect that he had even a thought of police work when he entered the University of South Carolina law school. He joined the department of justice In 1927 “just because the chance came along.’* He went to Cincinnati from Washington and then to Oklahoma City as officer in charge of both bureaus. Another short period in Washington followed, and then he was placed in command of the Birmingham bureau. Two years ago his record in the south won him the Chicago office when William H. McSwain retired from the bureau to take up a private law practice. His superiors must have seen deeply below his qui”t exterior, for he was specifically told that he was here to stop banditry. He’s Two Gun Man Investigation of charges against Samuel Insull and his associates of the Insull utility trust interrupted the bandit hunt until Dillinger jumped into the middlewestern scene with his gang of convict killers. Mr. Purvis oiled his single action and a .45 service automatic—always his armament in the field—and led a chase over ten states. His guns blazed in the front row when Dillinger fell.
