INSULLCOUNSEL HITS TESTIMONY OF ACCOUNTANT Federal Auditor to Face Court Grilling in Fraud Trial. B’t T nit*4 Prrt* CHICAGO. Oct. 23.—A government accountant who for two davs ha.s monopolized the spotlight in the trial of Samuel Insull and sixteen associates on a $143 000 000 mail fraud charge was scheduled again today to resist a counter-attack by eight fighting defense attorneys. The witness!). Robert A Knittle, brought with him a stack of charts showing operations of Insull stork pools in the days before Insull's utility companies crashed, with Josses bo 600.000 investors. Through a fog of cross-examin-ing questions. Mr Knittle attempted yesterday to tell a jury of small business men and farmers how Insull and his friends are alleged to have ‘rigged" the stock market to boost prices ot the securities tffey sold. A studious, near-sighted man, Mr. Knittle lapsed often into baffled silence as Floyd E Thompson, veteran criminal lawyer, harried him with questions and carefully planned traps. At one time Mr. Thompson argued that Mr. Knittle made a false impression on the jury. Judge Wilkerson remarked: ‘ Well, he didn’t make any false impression on me." The general gist of the expert’s testimony was that the Insull group, through agents, bought and sold stock in Corporation Securities Company, the vehicle of the alleged fraud, without actual change of ownership. The object was to give an illustration of market value to the public, prosecutors said.
