Mo, Oct 19 The “Cat and the Fiddle - ’ may be v> svni' of Rood music in cultured Boston, but it isn't in Kansas City, so Karl Krueeer, conductor of the Kansas City Philharmonic orchestra. Is turning his baton over to a subordinate for the remainder of the organization's commercial radio broadcasts. Art and commerce came to an abrupt parting of the ways today when Mr. Krueger was ordered to substitute for light opera selections the compositions of musical comedy hits. The United Drug Company. of which Louis K Liggett of Boston is the head, is sponsor of the series of twenty-six Sunday afternoon concerts. Mr. Krueger directed the orchestra Sunday through the first" program. Midway through the final selection Tschaikowsky's Fourth Symphony—the orchestra was cut off the air because the sponsor had used too much time with announcements. Then came the order for musical comedy selections. “I regard it as an impertinence for any one to set himself up as a spokesman for the American public and to say it is incapable of understanding. or indifferent to, the greatest beauty in music,” Mr. Krueger said. The Detroit orchestra in one month at the fair played to 161.000 people who sat enrapt through two-hour concerts. “I resent any one saying that radio audiences do not like good symphonic music.” A philharmonic orchestra, Mr Krueger said, is not adapted to the presentation of musical comedy airs. “I do not say that the compositions of Kern and Romberg are not good." he said, "but they are theater music and have no place on the program of a symphonic orchestra.” Mr. Krueger said he became convinced at Sunday's concert that it was impossible to present adequately a program of even light symphonic music in half an hour, ’ particularly when much of that time is taken up by commercial talk.” Because of his feeling. Mr. Krueger turned the radio programs over to an assistant. He will continue to direct the orchestra at public concerts. ‘JOKE’ BRINGS PRISON TERM TO FORD PLOTTER

Detroit Youth Sorry Now; Will Request Edsel to Help Him. By Unite 4 Preti DETROIT, Oct. 19.—A “joke” that went wrong ended in the federal prison farm at Milan, Mich., today for Edward Lickwala, 20-year-old youth, who attempted to extort $5,000 from Edsel Ford under penalty of death. Lickwala's "joke” was an extortion note demanding that Mr. Ford leave him 55.000 in a candy box on the porch of a Detroit resident, or be killed. He was arrested, indicted, arraigned, and sentenced Wednesday to ten years at hard labor in Leavenworth penitentiary. Today he

was sent to Milan and transferred to Leavenworth later. “I meant it all as a Joke," Lickwala muttered as the gates at Milan clanged shut behind him. ”Just a joke. I was always pulling jokes on people. But It got me into a mess of trouble this time.” Seated on a hard cot at Milan. Lickwala confided a last desperate plan to save himself from the years in prison by appealing to the man he had sought to terrorize. "I'm going to write Mr. Ford, if they'll let me,’- he said. "I'm going to write him another letter. I'm going to apologize for what I did and ask him to help me.” With her son facing ten years of prison routine, Edward's mother declared there is no pity in her heart for him. ”1 feel pity only for the members of our family who will have to suffer shame for his deed,” she said. "People will blame me. They will say I was responsible.” Mr. and Mrs. Steve Lickwala knew nothing of their son's plot against Ford until they were' notified of his arrest. There are seven children in the family. "Edward never told us anything,” Harry Lickwala, an older brother, said. "He would come here but after his marriage he was changed. His wife left him when his money gave out. But I can’t believe he would do such a thing as this for it.”
