CALIFORNIA NIT BY CLOUDBURST; LOSS JIOO.OOO 60 Families Driven From Homes by Flood; Farm Regions Benefit. &D United Pm, LOS ANGELES, Oct. 18.—A freak Tall storm which brought the seasons rainfall far above normal, heaped property damage as well as agricultural benefits upon Southern California today. Damage was estimated in excess of SIOO,OOO. Sixty families were driven from their homes in Long Beach by flood waters which damaged property along a two-mile front. A total of 2.7 finches of rain fell during the eighteen-hour storm, flooding streets as deep as four feet. The storm was accompanied by a slight t rthquake, a w'aterspout, estimated \t 200 feet high off Los Angeles harbor, and a miniature cyclone that descended -nth damaging force on Inglewood, a suburb. At least one death was reported. A schoolboy was feared drowned on the southeast side where waters raced above curbs to porch levels. Several witnesses said the boy fell into a water-filled ditch and was swept away. PONZI REACHES NAPLES: SAYS HE WAS ‘A PIKER’ “Should Have Sided With Big Fellows,” Exile Asserts. NAWAIIANS SEEK AID OF WEST IN CONGRESS FIGHT Island’s Business Leaders Resent Reverses, in Last Session. By United Pre,, WASHINGTON, Oct. 18.—A more effective political alliance with senators and congressmen from Pacific coast states will be sought by Hawaii when congress convenes in January. Stunned by political reversals at the last session, which island sugar planters now are endeavoring to repair by an injunction suit to restrain Henry A. territorial Interests require broader j support in 'Washington. San Francisco. Los Angeles, San Diego, Portland and Seattle all have definite commercial, shipping and even financial interests in the welfare and prosperity of the highlyproductive mid-Paciflc territory, but Hawaiian supporters feel this economic relationship has not been reflected in political alignments here. A change in this situation is being sought by Hawaiian business men. They desire to establish a more effective political collaboration with their mainland associates on legislative matters affecting mutual interests. Hawaiian supporters here contend that congressmen and senators from the Pacific coast during the last ten years, with few exceptions, have failed actively to concern themselves over Hawaiian interests. A curious situation arose by which a small group of midwestern Progressives and the four FarmerLabor congressmen from Minnesota were looked upon as the chief supporters of the territory. Hawaiian business men now are turning to the Pacific coast delegations as the most logical group to remedy existing conditions.
