Grand Tunes Are on Air From Afar
South America Sends Out Rhumba; Opera From Germany . Have you thrilled to those grand tunes from ‘Flying Down to Rio" that we've been hearing over standard broadcasts ever since the movie of that name was first produced? Have you listened to Ravel’s Bolero” and wanted to pound your palms in applause? Everybody loves a Spanish rhythm. It’s contagious! So let’s tune in on our great Spanishspeaking neighbor, the continent of South America. . Want a rhumba that’s a rhumba? Down at Station YV2RC at Caracas. Venezuela, there’s a trio of goodlooking, dark-haired boys named Lauro, Serrano and Ayesta. But never mind the names . . . just listen to that music. Those educated fingers and cajoling voices would make Kate Smith herself want to put a rose between her teeth and start clicking castanets. Vivacious Songsters Have another rhumba! Switch over to Colombia for it this time. And stay long enough for a few tangoes and paso dobles. Now down to Rio itself . . . Station PSK. You’ll admit that Brazilian music is pretty stirring. But maybe you’d rather hear some singing. At HC2RL there’s Paquita Parra (pronounced packeeta) singing the native songs of Ecuador in a lovely lyric soprano. And over at Caracas you may hear the vivacious Anita Jurado or the wistful Conehita Ascanio singing South American love songs. Paquita . . . Anita . . . Conehita. Don’t say that Spanish names are not romantic sounding! Berlin Offers Saxophonist Let’s try a little hotcha for a change. America doesn’t hold the patent on hot music, you know. At Beesen. Berlin (stations DJA, DJB, DJC. DJD), there’s a pretty blonde named Ingrid Larssen who shakes a wicked saxophone. But Germany has produced very great musicians, so we’d better linger long enough to hear some serious music as lucky, we’ll hear the beautiful operatic voice of Rosalind von Schirach. Imagine hearing opera sung by a brunet who looks like Kay Francis! That should squelch the last of the jokes about the fat prim a donna! And speaking of looks, it’s too bad we can’t see, as well as hear, the German barytone. Willi Domgraf Fassbaender. He’s the Ramon Novarro type, girls . . . but don’t crowd the iAen folk away from that dial, because we’re still traveling. Now Try Paris If you’re ready for a little light, gay music now we might pick up Paris. We may be able to hear a dance orchestra relayed from one of those famous Montmartre cases. Right across the English channel we’ll hear other bands: The British Broadcasting Company's dance orchestra, the Wireless Military band, the dance orchestras from London cases and hotels. And the chances are that Olive Groves will be somewhere on the program, for she’s one of Daventry's most versatile artists, appearing in concerts, revues, musical comedies and radio plays. Those are only a few of the more familiar stations. Spin the dial and you may get more.
Craddock Says He's Mike Fright Victim Although you’d never guess it. attacks of mike fright are everyday affairs for Deon Craddock, popular blues singer, who is heard with Little Joe Rardin over WBBM. Chicago at 11:45 to 12 tomorrow. "I'm always jittery before I start to sing.” confesses Deon, whose smooth performances invariably belie this statement. Little Joe. on the other hand, wouldn’t know what to do with mike fright if you gave it to him. He sings novelty songs, imitates ten different instruments and ad libs” comedy lines without a pang of nervousness. “Joe’s just unconscious—that's all,” according to Deon.

Third Season of Partners Started Honey and Lasses on WSM Program . By Timet Special NASHVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 17. "Well, hush my mouth,” says Honey Wilds as he barks at his senior partner, Lasses White. "Well, ain’t it the truth,” is Lasses’ comeback. Lasses White and Honey Wilds are well underway on their third season on the staff of WSM. They have created a warm spot in the hearts of their many radio friends with their wekly minstrel show, during which they are assisted by a cast of thirty. The Lasses and Honey sketches are presented each Monday and Friday night at 7:15. In addition the two boys appear on the “Grand Old Opry" at 9:15 each Saturday night. Lasses has been for twenty years one of America’s leading minstrel stars. He entered minstrelsy after quite a bit of experience in stock twenty-one years ago with Honey Boy Evans. Later he served with Neil O'Brien and Al G. Fields, after which he organized his own show in 1920. known as the Lasses White All Star Minstrel. which show he took on the road for six or seven years. Then he entered vaudeville and in 1932 joined the staff of WSM. For several years Honey Wilds has been his junior partner. The two form a neat contrast: Lasses with his thin squeaky voice and Honey who stands over six feet booming forth his ultimatum, but by no means bringing up the rear.
Seventh Season of Singers Opens By Times Special NASHVILLE. The members are Margaret Ackerman, soprano: Christine Lamb, contralto; George Nevins, tenor; Ovid Collins, baritone and director, and Miss Frank Hollowell, accompanist.
