budded, with no open space* between the white flowerets. The compact surface should be smooth. While shopping for broccoli you should look for almost the same qualities as In cauliflower, to which It is related. The delicate little buds should be close and compact, and they should be green, fresh, tender and Juicy. Broccoli that has begun to fade and grow grassy is hardly worth ordering.
LATEST STORE OF STANDARD STARTSCAREER Modern Grocery Opened on North Side: Food Protection Stressed. The Standard Grocery Company today announced the opening of its latest modernized store at Twentysixth street and Capitol avenue, the interior cf which is arranged, company officials explained, to insure absolute food protection and customer convenience. Features of the new store are its electric refrigeration system, sanitary shelving, daylight lighting, allmetal cases constructed with stainless steel and what company officials describe as a perfect ventilating system. Standard, an Indianapolis owned and operated company, with a personnel of 1,200, feels that its modernization program, initiated just before the bank holiday last year, and continued steadily since then, is proof of its faith in the city. The program has given added employment to hundreds of men in the building trades, Standard officials say. The grocery company was founded thirty-seven years ago by L. A. Jackson.

ROAST OF PORK MAY GIVE DOUBLE SERVICE Slicing Cold or Combination With Peppers Suggested. Pork roast is a more practical investment than It might appear at first sight, because it can be depended upon to be good for another meal or two. For return appearances it might be sliced cold or cut fine and stuffed into green peppers. Have the shoulder bone removed and fill this cavity with a stuffing of bread and onions, seasoned with sage, pepper and salt. Rub grated rind of lemon over the surface of the meat, then squeeze a lemon over it just before putting it into the oven. Bake in a moderate oven and allow at least twenty minutes a pound. Serve apple sauce with it; also potatoes, sweet or white.

CANAPES WILL GIVE VARIETY TO CHILD DIET Tasty Fillings Suggested for Sandwiches Used in School Lunch. School children hav£ a right to expect nicer sandwiches in their new lunch boxes than ever before, especially those whose modem mothers do a lot of dashing around to late afternoon parties. Most of the sandwich and canape fillings at the smartest affairs, though they contain less than one good bite, are wholesome enough for husky sandwiches and so delicious that they would be a welcome change from the good old standbys. Don’t neglect such wholesome fare as ham with mustard, ground beef with Worcestershire, veal, tongue, jelly and 1 , cream cheese, using different varieties of bread. Grated carots, chopped celery or
shredded lettuce make the meat sandwiches more palatable. No lunch box is complete without fresh fruit or some celery or raw carrots to nibble. The children will enjoy their noon meal more if you also put in a cookie or cup cake. The following sandwich recipes were adapted from party food: Watercress Sandwich Health experts have been pushing watercress to the front as an important food. There are scientists who say that one could live indefinitely onamilk and watercress, because the cress contains the few important elements that milk lacks. Dark bread is best. Spread butter as thin as possible, then put in a generous amount of filling, cress leaves cut small with the scissors and slightly moistened with mayonnaise. Cucumber and Cream Cheese Soften cream cheese with a fork and mix with cropped cucumber. On one piece of the buttered bread spread mayonnaise, then lay on some shredded lettuce. Spread the companion slice with the cucumber and cheese mixture. Olive and Nut Sandwich Chop olives and nuts fine and moisten with mayonnaise or cream cheese. Don’t be stingy with the filling.
