LABOR OPPOSES NRA DUTIES FOR CLAYWILLIAMS A. F. of L. Delegates Want Probe of Tobacco Man’s Labor Views. Bp t'nit'H frt| BAN FRANCISCO Oct 3 —While in the convention hall marked time leaders of the American Federation of Labor forged with definite atrokes today their fighting program for a greater share of New Deal benefits for the working man. One of the first of labor's expressions of intensified militancy toward the NRA and its workings will come action on the resolution demanding an investigation of the labor attitude ot 8 Clay Williams, chairman of the Reynolds Tobacco Compenv, before he is given important administrative duties in the new NRA setup. The resolution, which many delegates believe will be approved overwhelmingly cites Mr. Williams for alleged discrimination against workers in code planning and expresses the fear that placing men of his type in power will result in “virtual enslavement” of labor. Coupled with this demand there will come from the convention hopper labor's program for security legislation, including old age pensions and unemployment insurance, and the paramount proposal for establishment of the five-hour day and the six-day week as the only real solution of the problem of unemployment. While there appeared to be virtual unanimity supporting these proposals, internal disputes wracked the A. F. of L. in its fifty-fourth annual convention. The issues were drawn sharply by the presentation of resolutions expanding the executive council from eleven to twentyeight members; calling for indorsement of industrial unions; and proposing a general one-day strike on the day congress meets as an expression of labor’s power. 3-Hour Week Opposed •Copyright. 1934. by United Pressi WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 —Unqualified opposition to legislation for a thirty-hour labor work week was indicated today as part of the Administration's program in the reconctruction of NRA. But it was learned on good authority that President Roosevelt is prepared to fight just as hard to make collective bargaining the unquestioned right of all American workers. The recovery administration intends as its next major step toward prosperity to seek regular yearly •wages for American workmen. Members of the new National Industrial Recovery board feel that it is all right for movie stars to work intermittently, since they receive thousands of dollars each week. But the man who earns only $25 a week, the recovery chieftains insist, has a right to earn it fifty-two weeks each year. HER ‘MISFORTUNE’ TOLD Itinerant Hypnotist Stole Her $6, Women Tells Police.
