ICKES TO SEEK ‘REAL’ SUM FOR PUBUCWORKS Wants Appropriations to Continue Projects Until Slump Ends. Hv r'nitrd Prrtu WASHINGTON, Oct. 2.—Harold L. Ickes. secretary of the interior, indicated today he would seek a ‘real'’ public works appropriation from the next congress to carry the recovery program until industry has resumed normal activities. *‘l would like to see a real appropriation.” Mr. Ickes said when asked if he would seek an additional appropriation of $1,000,000,000. “I think the public works program has more than justified itself. I think we should go ahead with it until we are out of the depression. We should be prepared, however, to slacken up when private industry has resumed its normal activity.” Mr. Ickes estimated that it would require $200,000,000 to carry on the 1935 work on uncompleted projects. These include such developments as the tri-borough bridge and the midtown tunnel in New York City, the Grand Coulee dam. the Bonneville power project in Oregon, the Loup and Sutherland irrigation developments in Nebraska and the Casper-Alcova project in Wyoming.
