The monthly family cost varies In different localities, dropping to as low as $2 or less in some southern renters and advancing to more than S3O in densely populated industrial towns of the north. Mr. Hopkins says that in the low brackets the two or three dollar costs do not represent the full value of relief to families, but do give an acurate estimate of the difference, in cash.
between what the family produces in commodities and its needs. The cost of relief per family is rising with the general increase in food and commodity prices, Mr. Hopkins says. In order to offset a greater outlay of federal funds, the FERA has instituted a critical survey of all persons on relief, hoping that the load may be reduced to include only thost actually in need. There are now slightly less than 4.000.000 families on relief. One person from each three families is employed at cash wages on federal relief work projects. Mr. Hopkins contends this number of workers will not be greatly increased during the winter, saying the present total of 1.600.000 persons is “top.” Each day Hopkins is bombarded with entreaties and demands for a renewal of the civil works administration of last winter.
