Clark Charges Government With Aiding Munitions Manufacturers. Hn l ntt.n Prist WASHINGTON. Sept. 21 Charges that United States agencies co-operated in a disgraceful manner" with American armament manufacturers were presented today with close of the first phase of the sensational inquiry of the senate munitions committee. Sena or Bennett Champ Clarlt t Dem., Mo.• said evidence obtained bv the c ommittec showed a definite link be* ween American munitions companie- and the international "arms ring ' " * “It is disgraceful,” he said, ‘ for the United States government to participate in munitions sales around the world.' l.arl> Legislation Hoped Clark said that he believed revelations in the last moving inquiry would result in passage of legislation in the next congress “removing government from munitions business' Already, the committee has heard that the departments of state, war. navy and commerce have assisted American armament manufacturers in selling products abroad around the world. Today the committee will conclude the first phase of its inquiry. It probably will resume the investigation about Nov. 19. If sufficient funds are available, it hopes to examine the affairs of the huge Bethlehem Steel and United States Steel corporations which built warships for the United States na\y. .Militia Chief Criticised. The committee continued to unfold stones of graft in the munitions business. Evidence which entered the record m the last three weeks indicated that some American companies considered bribery the only method of obtaining foreign business. Clark said today that he regarded as one of the most important disclousures of the investigation, the close relationship between munition companies and the government. Clark also demanded that MajorGeneral George E. Leach, chief of the bureau militia, “be put before a board" for a letter praising B. C. Goss, president of the Lake Eric Chemiral Company, for his activities in the munitions field. Grinders on Strike Duty. Bo I nils and Prr*s VALDOSTA. Ca . Sept. 21—Because of the textile strike. The Theatrical World ‘Count of Monte Cristo’ Is Splendid Picture BY WALTER D. lIICKMAN

John Groth Tonight at 8 o'clock, John Groth of Chicago and art editor of Esquire, will speak at the open forum of the John Reed Club at 318 Columbia Securities building, 143 East Ohio street. Mr. Groth recently returned from Europe, where he visited France, England, Germany and the Soviet Union. He will discuss and compare contemporary trends in the graphic arts and cultural movements.
INTEREST in the talking movie version of “The Count of Monte Cristo” rests upon the romantic and individual character work of Robert Donat, who changes Edmond Dantes from a romantic, love-sick boy into a mature man with a definite program for eliminating his enemies. In Mr. Donat's hands, Dantes’ campaign of ruining and killing
those who falsely imprisoned hi m becomes logical and even placed on an extremely high plane. Donat as Dantes convinces the spectator that in removing his personal enemies he Is destroying enemies of the people because they hold high public offices at the time of

their deaths. This famous story has been photographed, directed and acted consistently and beautifullv. Tlie ending is really too much Hollywood, too sentimental. That is the only criticism I can make against this one. It is necessary that the beginning be slow because the plot to bring Napoleon back into power in France has a definite place in the story and one the future suffering and change on Edmond Dantes. The spectator gets the impression that he is suffering with Dantes when he is thrown into prison. I know the acting w*as so realistic I wanted to help Dantes and the Abbe Faria dig their way out of the
dungeon. A day in that prison was as long as a year. a a a WATCH the tremendously fine work of O. P. Heggie as the Abbe. It is a performance you will remember, especially his death scene. Elissa Landi as Mercedes is a little too Pollyanna at times, but she hits her stride when she faces Dantes under the name of the Count of Monte Cristo. Splendid character work is supplied by Louis Calhern, Sidney Blackmer, Raymond Walburn, William Farnum, Walter Walker, and many others. Mr. Donat, who makes his first appearance in an American-made picture, is a careful and an intelligent actor. He gives a complete and a well-rounded portrayal of Dantes in the various changes of his fortune. Do not be afraid of this movie because it is period and a costume drama. It is another accomplishment that movieland has the right to be proud of. REAL ESTATE BOND LOSSES TO BE PROBED
House Investigators Ready to Reveal Part of Explanation. By United Press WASHINGTON, Sept. 21.—House investigators announced today that they were ready to reveal part of the story behind losses of many billions of dollars suffered by Americans who put their life savings on real estate bonds. Preliminary hearings of the sele*tr house committee authorized to investigate real estate bondholders’ reorganizations and receiverships will begin Tuesday in New York. Representative A. J.Sabath <Dem.. 111.), chairman of the committee, said twenty prominent New York members of real estate bondholders protective committees some of whose names are of national repute, have been ordered to appear with their books and records. Sabath explained that these hearings are preliminary to more extended ones which will be held in New York later. “Such concerns as S. V/. Straus & Cos., the American Bond and Mortgage Cos., and many others will be subjected to inquiry ” Sabath said. He estimated that several billions of dollars of the $10,000,000,000 of bonds which have been floated are held in New York City. He said in many instances which the committee already has uncovered values of the bonds have been wiped out while in many other instances bondholders will not receive more than 10 per cent on their investment. The committee, Sabath said, will seek to find out how the bondholders’ reorganization and protective committees were set up, the holdings or interests of the committee in the actual bond issues, how attorneys and receivers came to be appointed and the method and motive for setting up collateral corporations such as management corporations and liquidation trusts. Prince to Wed Nov. 29 By United Press LONDON, Sept. 21—The wedding of Prince George and Princess Marina of Greece will take place in Westminster Abbey on Nov. 29, it was said authoritatively today.
